“Isn’t it a surprise, Lanlan?” Liwei asked as she and Grandmother smiled at how shocked she was and how her gaze was stuck on Wen Zac.
Ming Lan got back to her senses and moved her gaze away from him as she hesitantly cleared her throat, not knowing what to say.
Wen Zac and his parents turned to get inside home. When Ming Lan moved her gaze from him, Wen Zac looked at his grandmother as he walked towards them.
“Finally, you are back,” Grandmother smiled at him.
He kneeled in front of her wheelchair and held his grandmother’s hand, “Yes, Grandmother. How are you?”
“I am absolutely fine. Shouldn’t you ask this to someone else instead?” Grandmother said teasingly as everyone understood the meaning of her words.
He nodded and looked at Ming Lan, who felt shy under everyone’s gaze. She was not this shy and hesitant even when she came to this home six months back as a bride. She could only look at him and no words could come out as she didn’t know how to start.
“You should first freshen up Zac. You look tired,” Mrs Wen said and looked at Ming Lan, “Lanlan, you can go with him and help him.”
Ming Lan nodded like an obedient daughter-in-law as she looked at her mother-in-law and then looked at Wen Zac who was ready to follow his mother’s instructions.
The two walked together to go inside the home as no one said a word.
Once they entered home, Liwei commented as she giggled, “How red was Lanlan’s face seeing her own husband! She is shy though they have been married for like six months.”
“You won’t understand,” Mrs. Wen said as she smiled, “Both look so sweet together. I hope they won’t be hesitant with each other for long.”
“Let them take their time,” Grandmother commented, “It won’t be long till both would be in so much love like my son and you.”
Mrs. Wen nodded while Mr. Wen said, “He is my son so he is bound to love his wife just like his father does.”
“My son would be a good husband and she will be happy with him,” Mrs Wen commented and no one denied it.
Wen Zac and Ming Lan continued to walk in the Drawing room to go towards the staircase to the first floor. Wen Zac finally broke the silence.
“How have you been?” he asked, calmly.
“Good!” she replied in a single word. “Umm…You said you would be returning in two days…”
“Are you not happy to see me back early?” he asked as he looked at her.
She felt caught off guard, “Oh..No..I don’t mean that way. I..was just asking.”
“Work was finished earlier than expected,” he replied and she nodded in understanding.
They both walked on the stairs as Wen Zac matched her pace in silence. Ming Lan glanced at him in between, his face without any particular expressions and it was difficult for her to guess what was in his mind and how she should react or talk about it.
‘Why does everything feel so difficult suddenly? When he left me at the airport, everything between us was so different and I felt close to him but….it feels distant now…’ she sighed inwardly, ‘it’s my fault anyways. I am the one to stay away for so long and we are back to square one.’
When she was immersed in her thoughts, they already reached their room. Wen Zac opened the door and let her in first.
Click!
The door behind them closed and Ming’s Lan’s heart skipped a bit. She didn’t know why she was so nervous but could not stop feeling that way.
“I’ll take shower,” she heard Wen Zac and got back to her senses, “Uhm…I’ll get clothes for you.” She immediately went to the wardrobe and opened it. “What would you like to wear?”
“Anything other than office clothes,” he replied as he put his mobile on the table and removed his watch.
She contemplated what clothes she should select. ‘Why is such an easy task feeling so difficult? I don’t even know what he would like to wear.’
Just then she felt presence behind her as she heard him say, “You can get that dark blue shirt.”
Ming Lan froze in her place as she felt being trapped in a small space and it felt intimate. She was standing between the opened door of the wardrobe and behind her he was standing. She felt her heart beating faster and could not move her hand even a bit.
“….and any light colored pants,” she heard him again from behind her.
She got back to her senses and nodded immediately. She pulled out the said shirt for him and got the light color trousers with her slightly trembling hands.
‘Why am I being over sensitive? Am I going to get my periods?’
“Undergarments,” he said and she immediately reacted to get them. Once she got everything, she turned around and faced him. Her heart was almost in her throat as she managed to say with her gaze lowered, “I will keep them in the bathroom.”
She didn’t have courage to look into his eyes when they were so close. Even without looking at him, she could feel his piercing gaze at her.
Wen Zac simply nodded and gave her side so she could leave. He watched her walking towards the bathroom, his gaze only stuck at her and his mind was only busy thinking about her.
A while ago, the moment he saw her outside when she came out of the home, he wished to go to her straightaway and take her in his arms but he noticed she was hesitant and it would have embarrassed her even more in front of her other family members.
Now they were in the room alone, he wished to do it, but her nervousness didn’t go unnoticed by him and he had to hold back. Suddenly forcing his desires on her didn’t feel right to him and he thought to wait.
He walked inside the bathroom where Ming Lan had arranged his clothes and was returning when he came across her.
“I…have put the clothes there,” she informed in a low and gentle voice.
“Thank you,” he said and stepped aside to make a way for her.
Ming Lan walked past him and stepped out of the bathroom as she closed the door behind her.
‘Seems like we have to start all over again.’
