Chapter 6Footsteps in the Hallway

Alone in the sanctuary of my room, I sat on the edge of my bed and tried to untangle the knot of my own life.

How was I supposed to handle this burgeoning situation with Baobao? If her feelings were as deep and genuine as she claimed, what was my role in this chaotic narrative? It felt like a surreal, hackneyed plot lifted from a low-budget novel, yet here I was, living through the fallout of a childhood promise, wrestling with the irony that while other people who undergo transmigrations are usually gifted with god-like powers or golden fingers, I had arrived in this world with absolutely nothing but the complicated baggage of a man I had somehow become.

Two days had drifted by since I first woke up in this reality, and I felt the lines of my own identity beginning to blur, the edges of my previous life fading into a murky, distant haze as I became inextricably fused with the person I now was, left only with the strange sensation that this world was becoming more real to me than the one I had left behind.

I was still deeply ensconced in the labyrinth of my own thoughts, wrestling with the phantom memories of a life that felt increasingly like a fading dream, when I completely failed to register the soft, rhythmic click of the door latch giving way behind me. A slender, alluring silhouette slipped into the room with the practiced grace of a shadow, and before I could even pivot to investigate the sudden change in air pressure, a pair of warm, familiar arms had snaked around my neck from behind, pulling me into a suffocatingly intimate embrace.

Adrenaline surged through my veins, my survival instincts overriding my reverie as I reacted with raw, kinetic energy, spinning around and pinning the intruder beneath me before my rational mind could catch up to my reflexive body.

"Who is there?" I demanded, my breath hitching in my throat, only to realize that the person trapped beneath my weight was none other than my third sister, Du Lamei.

The tension instantly evaporated from my muscles, and I released my grip, though she didn't seem particularly eager to escape, looking up at me with a pout that suggested she was thoroughly enjoying the chaotic thrill of our physical entanglement.

"Third sister, please, for the love of heaven, stop sneaking in like this. You nearly scared the living daylights out of me," I chastised, wiping sweat from my brow, but she only smirked, playfully retorting that she had no intention of changing her habits because she found the prospect of terrifying me far too amusing.

I felt a reckless, mischievous impulse take hold, a desire to tease her back, so I leaned in close and whispered, "Be careful, or you might find yourself in a situation you aren't prepared to handle."

It was a vague warning that, to my horror, Lamei interpreted as a profound carnal suggestion. Her eyes widened, her internal monologue racing as she convinced herself that I had finally, undeniably, seen through the facade of her long-repressed desires and was signaling my intention to finally act upon them.

I saw her hesitate, a momentary flicker of struggle passing behind her gaze as she reminded herself that a woman shouldn't be too easy, lest she lose the prize she had spent years coveting. So she pushed my chest gently, whispering with feigned aloofness that she wasn't a woman to be won without a significant effort on my part.

Before she could finish her lecture on the virtue of persistence, I clamped a hand over her mouth, my ears twitching as the distinct, unmistakable sound of approaching footsteps echoed from the hallway — a sound that she misinterpreted as a sign of my mounting, uncontainable passion. She stared at me, her face flushed with a mixture of anticipation and raw, unfiltered excitement, waiting for me to seal our fate.

But I pulled my hand away and hissed, "Third sister, hide. Quickly. Someone is coming."

The spell was shattered. The prospect of being discovered in my room in the dead of night by our eldest sister, a woman whose wrath was legendary, instantly turned her romantic fantasy into a fight for survival, and she dove under the bed in a frantic, undignified scramble just as the door handle turned.

Du Lizhi sauntered into the room draped in a sheer, provocative sleeping garment that seemed designed to test my resolve, clearly operating under the assumption that I would be fast asleep. The sudden, jarring encounter with my wide-awake gaze caused her to freeze, and she awkwardly scratched at her head, trying to salvage a sliver of composure as she asked if I'd been thinking of her.

In a moment of sheer, unadulterated social sabotage, my mouth moved before my brain could stop it, and I replied, "I suppose I have been thinking of you."

It was a confession that caused both our pupils to dilate in shock, while the muffled gasp emanating from beneath the bed suggested that Lamei was equally horrified by my accidental declaration. I felt the heat rising in my cheeks, a burning mortification that made me want to shrink into the floorboards. I sounded like a predator, a total degenerate, and I frantically backtracked, begging her to forget I'd ever said such a thing.

But Lizhi merely chuckled, a low, melodic sound that seemed to vibrate in the very air between us. She glided to the edge of the bed and sat down, her presence so overwhelming that it felt as if the room had shrunk, and her delicate, cool fingers reached out to pinch my cheek with a familiar, taunting affection, whispering that if I truly desired her, I should have the courage to say it plainly, for she might just be willing to introduce me to the secrets that only adults were privy to.

Just as she leaned in, her voice a sultry invitation, another frantic, metallic jangle erupted from the door handle, sending Lizhi springing into the air like a startled cat. She darted toward the only available cover, diving into the space beneath the bed just as the door swung wide open, revealing yet another shadow waiting to claim the night.

As I lay there, feigning a deep, peaceful slumber, a sliver of light from the hallway spilled across the floor before a familiar, petite head peeked inside, and the moment Du Zi Yuan caught sight of me, her mood shifted from cautious to radiant. She slipped into the room with the silence of a predator and dove under the covers, pressing her lithe, warm body against my back with an intimacy that left me breathless.

I did my best to perform a convincing startle, rolling over and feigning confusion as I blinked, only to find her face inches from mine, grinning with a playful, teasing energy before she planted a soft, lingering kiss on my cheek.

I instinctively shoved her away, my heart stuttering against my ribs as I stammered, "Fourth sister, we're not children anymore. Surely this kind of contact is inappropriate."

Her face fell, a shadow of genuine disappointment crossing her features as she glared at me, demanding to know why I would act so cold when a sister kissing her own brother was the most natural thing in the world. She played the part of the indignant victim perfectly, yet I saw the trace of frantic, nervous hesitation in her eyes, a sharp contrast to the chaotic battlefield unfolding beneath the bed.

There, in the cramped darkness, Du Lizhi had locked gazes with Du Lamei, their eyes narrowed in a silent, venomous exchange of suspicion. Lamei was the first to strike, hissing a demand to know why the other was under my bed.
