Nenah was surprised to learn from Anne that every princess who had come here to be married had suffered emotionally. Anne was teary-eyed, worried for Nenah's safety. One of the other maids shouted at Anne, since she had told her not to go out by herself while Prince Set was gone.
Then they turned their attention to the reason for it, which was another maid screaming because of the guard captain from the other day. Nenah wanted to help the girl, but sadly, everyone ignored the corrupt things he did, since he was a highborn man.
So Nenah ran to them and began hysterically screaming about the pain from the cut Set had given her, getting the maid out of the situation by asking her to take her back to her room.
She apologized to Hikami later, but felt that something had to be done about that guard captain. Hikami sighed and told Nenah that she should worry about herself, since if she angered Prince Set again, it could spell trouble.
Nenah wondered about that, after everything she had heard about him. She speculated that he must have rules for himself, since he hadn't killed her the other day. He certainly threatened to kill, but the only person he had killed was the princess who turned a blade against him. Maybe he only killed people who tried to kill him, and had specifically chosen princesses to do it. She believed this might be a contest of patience, and that all she had to do was not lose.
Hikami wondered how Nenah could be so brave after what had happened. Did she not value her life? She could not understand this impostor princess. But she decided to help teach Nenah how to protect herself.
Later, Nenah stood in a maid's outfit, the key piece in her scheme. It had been a struggle to get her into it, the buttoning too tight across the chest, and Nenah did not appreciate the inadvertent commentary on her figure.
Outside, the guard captain was berating one of the other guards. It felt good to this sick man, but he felt it would be better still to berate a woman.
He spotted Nenah in her maid's outfit and thought her an unknown, beautiful maid who must be new. She made obvious bait of herself by loudly remarking on the prettiness of a feather.
Siligard shouted at her that touching Set's possessions was a serious crime. Grabbing her hand, he threatened to punish her — and that was when she turned to reveal herself, leaving him stunned in place.
She began casually calling for help, saying that this man was attacking a princess. He tried to excuse it as a mistake, but she showed off the handprint he had made, clear as day, and used his own words against him: touching Prince Set's possessions was a serious crime.
He went for an attack, but fortunately Nenah was prepared from what Hikami had taught her. Seeing his weak point, she landed a single decisive strike, and then told the guards to throw the man into the dungeon.
Nenah was overjoyed. She wasn't allowed to speak to the prince first — but now, thanks to this event, she had a reason to. The depraved guard captain had proved useful to her.
Through her brash yet confident manner of speaking, she won the hearts of the people around her. They began to warm to her and to treat her like a proper princess.
Returning from his purge, Set asked whether something had happened, since the atmosphere around the castle was different. So his adviser explained.
Finding Nenah, Set wanted to know what her excuse was, using his name to throw the guard captain into the dungeon. Did she fancy herself the lady of this castle?
She told him it was his fault for letting the guard do as he pleased. So he pinned her to the wall with his blade and said that maybe next time he should cut her to the bone. She remained calm and put his blade aside, telling him that wouldn't happen, since she had no intention of hurting him.
Then Nenina came flying in, calling for the prince, first attacking Nenah's head before resting on her arm. Set took notice of Nenah's divine messenger's blue eyes. He decided to leave his bird in her care, as a way to keep her near him.
So she accepted the challenge head on.
While sweeping, she called Set an idiot. But Nenina called Nenah an idiot instead. So Nenah decided to tease the bird by pretending to eat a seed right in front of her, and got herself attacked for it.
Set entered then, annoyed by all the noise, since it was preventing him from napping. To him, his bird's voice was like a gentle breeze. Nenah's, he said, was purely noise.
As he sat down, Nenah quickly threw a blanket over him, saying he'd catch a cold, and calling herself such a considerate queen. He just laughed, and then called her a considerate servant, meaning she hadn't made any progress today.
She had come here to become queen and protect Fortna, only to discover that Set thought of queens merely as tools for justifying conquest. She was hoping to change him, and instead she was being told to get out for the day. She just wished she had more to work with.
Before she left, though, he told her that she would be going to Galatada with him soon, and that she needed to prepare herself.
Back in her room, the maids were ecstatic, since no princess before her had actually gone to Galatada with Set. Nenah was skeptical of the idea that he had taken a liking to her, though. Hikami suggested that since her wedding was in the spring, Set's family must have invited her out of curiosity. This was probably a critical juncture for her, since parental approval was crucial to any marriage.
She decided to ask around, and learned that the king was a stern person who had expanded the nation, and that Set had two older brothers despite being the crown prince. She couldn't get any more information out of anyone else.
So she decided to get it straight from the source, by telling Nenina that she was looking forward to meeting the king and Set's brothers, and wondering aloud what they were like.
Set knew what she was doing. He told Nenah not to use his bird as an excuse to talk to him. He asked whether she thought this was her chance to ingratiate herself with his family, and she responded honestly: yes.
