Chapter 13Inside the Black Wing

Suddenly they were stopped by Yor's sparkling men. Yor, the prince of the black wing, had her forcibly brought to him, and now he was telling her that she was allowed to spend time here.

Allowed? She played it off, saying she couldn't, since she had animals to look after, and she needed to ask Set's permission first. Yor shouted that she didn't need Set's permission, because she was free to visit any wing now. He was determined to make Nenah his queen and take the throne.

One of his attendants explained that Set's mother had had impure relations as a priestess, and had thus been impure. Nenah wondered whether that meant Set's mother had never returned to secular life, unlike Alicia.

To her surprise, Yor had already prepared bedchambers for Nenah. But upon hearing that he had no intentions of sleeping with a woman, and seeing all of his handsome men, she suspected he was gay. She got up to get closer to him, and when his men tried to stop her, she thought maybe he hated women. This embarrassed him, so he had her thrown out.

In her room in the black wing, she thought about how Set hadn't told her what he wanted out of all this. Now she felt a little lonely, which was also strange to her. Lying in bed together last night, she had thought that maybe the two of them were starting to understand each other.

When dinner finally came to her room, she thought the server's build seemed perfect, so she tied him up and took his outfit to make an escape.

Hearing about this, Yor commanded his men to go after her.

While making her escape, she stopped at one point, wondering whether there was any point in going back if Set didn't want her. She contemplated being fine with any of the princes, since her goal was to protect Fortna. But still evading Yor's men, she convinced herself she was going back because she still had Nenina and Mavaria to take care of. No other reason.

Back where Set was, one of his attendants explained that Nenah had most likely been taken by Yor, and that her attendants were worried. Hikami wanted to go to the black wing to retrieve her, and was willing to accept any punishment for it. She questioned whether Set was going to compete for the throne.

He was unfazed, and responded that the throne wasn't even worth fighting over, since it would fall into his hands even if he didn't want it. He knew that the blood to become king was within him. That same blood had joined him on every battlefield, and not a drop of it had ever been spilled. He believed it was his fate to live in eternal emptiness.

But now he had second thoughts, remembering Nenah telling him not to accept the idea of fate.

As Nenah snuck out of the window, she was met by Prince Bedau, who congratulated her on her escape. She wanted to get back to the white wing, but of course he had every intention of taking her to his purple wing.

Yor commanded him to let her go, reminding Bedau that they were forbidden from invading one another's wings. Then he yelled at Nenah for making a mockery of him, and she told him she wasn't, that she just wanted to get back to her animals. So he had his men seize her and commanded them to cut off one of her legs, saying that the loss of a single leg wouldn't prevent her from performing her role.

They held her down, putting the sword directly against it, despite Bedau telling Yor to stop. Yor told Nenah to apologize, but she didn't know what for.

Then, kicking one of Yor's men down, Set came to the rescue.

Nenah was surprised to see him here, wondering whether he had actually come to save her. Yor wondered how Set had got in, to which Set responded that Yor's men had simply let him through. In truth, the men did not want to trifle with the war god.

He walked over to Nenah and offered his hand to take her back. Bedau told Set that he wasn't the only one with a right to the princess of Fortna, to which Set cockily agreed, adding that Nenah already belonged to him.

She was embarrassed to see Set opening her shirt, but this was to reveal to his brothers the scar he had made on her chest. Having marked his territory, he refused to let anyone else have her.

Still embarrassed, back in Set's room, she pushed his hand off her shoulder, reminding him that she still hadn't forgiven him for opening her shirt. He genuinely questioned whether what he had done was wrong. When she told him it definitely was, he retorted that he had only shown a little. She started pounding on him, saying she didn't appreciate it, and in response he told her he wouldn't do it again.

She thought about how she didn't like his attitude, having almost forgiven him for a second there. As he continued to squeeze her more tightly, she and Mavaria objected to it, and she even headbutted his chin.

Anne and Hikami commented on how the two of them had become quite close now. Nenah ran over to Anne, complaining about how Set wouldn't let go of her, and how it scared her. Then he came up and said gently, "Don't leave my sight." She didn't know what his intentions were with that.

Later, while she was wandering, Yor's men from the black wing came by to apologize on behalf of their prince, saying that Yor hadn't really intended to cut off her leg, and that he actually hated the sight of blood. She could tell that his attendants really loved him. They wanted her to give Yor the chance to become king.

Nenah thought about this whole thing, wondering why the current king wouldn't arrange an audience with her to discuss the next crowning.

She stepped outside for some fresh air and was greeted by Prince Tote. He told her not to be wary of him, since he had no intentions of taking the crown whatsoever. He remarked that Nenah was wonderful, and that he had never seen Set back down before anyone except her, which was why he was worried for Nenah.

He went on about how his brother Set wasn't normal. He'd had interest in nothing but battle since the age of twelve, and had slaughtered hundreds of foes by himself. He led the vanguard with no fear of death, and they said his long hair resembled the scythe of a servant of the underworld. Everyone spoke of Set becoming a ruthless king who would kill without reason, and about how he was cursed by the temple of blood. Tote thought Bedau and Yor, despite their flaws, were still better choices.

The more Nenah heard from Tote, the less true his rumors seemed. She just brushed them off, telling the prince he shouldn't spread rumors as though they were the truth.

As she said her goodbyes, Tote smirked.

Back in her room, she asked Set about the temple of blood. His response was to ask whether someone else had said something about it to her. She had already heard all she needed to know, but still she wanted to hear the truth from him.

He actually agreed, and brought her out to the ruined temple.

Ten years ago, the temple's head priest had leapt from the roof to his death. That dreadful sight was the very reason the place was called the temple of blood.

Set had been raised within the temple, hidden from the royal family, because a woman who had brought shame upon herself by having an affair with the king while she was a priestess had wanted to eliminate her pregnancy entirely. She was apparently an unforgettable beauty, but Set didn't remember her, so he couldn't confirm it.

When Nenah asked whether the head priest had been like a parent to Set, he basically told her no. The head priest had only looked after Set because he was blindly in love with Set's mother. Sometimes he treated Set like the child of the woman he adored, and other times he treated Set like the detestable child of the king who had tarnished the priestess. Set feared opening the door every day, to find out which it would be.

He prayed for forgiveness daily. Then one time he was abandoned for several days and nearly died of hunger. He thought he was going to perish amidst the stench of filth, and he was thankful at the time for the mercy of sweet death.

But the priest returned, showing him that despite his prayers, he was never truly forgiven.
