Chapter 15The Picture Book Animals

The following day, Thomas refused to leave Minjun's side, and seemed upset about something. Curious, Minjun asked what was wrong. He noticed that the boy had clung to him ever since breakfast, barely even letting him eat. Thomas had even refused Daiki's goodnight kiss, and would not let him come close.

He also refused to attend his lessons, and chose instead to spend his time drawing.

Looking at the picture, Minjun asked what he was drawing. Thomas looked confused and asked whether his mama really did not know. Then he held up the drawing proudly and explained that it was a chick. A baby chicken.

Minjun struggled to hold back a laugh at the innocent explanation.

Thomas then asked whether Minjun had ever seen a real chick, because he had never seen one himself. Surprised, Minjun asked whether that was really true.

The conversation became more serious when Thomas asked whether chicks were dead.

Trying to change the subject, Minjun picked up a book and pointed to a picture of a rabbit. He asked Thomas whether he knew what it was.

Thomas answered that it was a rabbit. Then he raised his hands and asked, innocently, whether the rabbit was dead too.

Shocked by the question, Minjun asked whether Thomas had really never seen a rabbit before. Thomas replied honestly that he was not allowed to leave the house.

That answer saddened Minjun. Lost in thought, he eventually went to find Kenta in the study.

He explained that Thomas had never seen a chick or a rabbit. Kenta confirmed that it was true.

Showing him the picture book, Minjun explained that Thomas believed the animals were dead. Then he asked whether Thomas could at least visit a zoo.

Kenta refused immediately, explaining that it was too dangerous, because crowded places posed too great a risk to Thomas.

Minjun refused to give up. He asked Kenta to arrange a trip to the zoo that weekend. Kenta stayed silent, and Minjun insisted that he speak to Daiki about it.

Looking at him suspiciously, Kenta asked whether he was afraid of the boss. Without hesitation, Minjun admitted that he was.

To his surprise, Kenta confessed that he was afraid of Daiki as well.

Just then Thomas ran into the room looking for his mama. He hugged Minjun's leg and asked sweetly whether the animals would ever come back to life. Patting his head gently, Minjun assured him that all the animals were alive.

Thomas then looked hopefully at Kenta and asked whether they could go to the zoo, because he wanted to see a bunny.

Unable to resist the boy's adorable expression, Kenta finally agreed to speak with Daiki. Thomas jumped up excitedly, shouting that he was going to see a bunny.

Minjun then noticed Thomas making a strange movement with his body, and asked what he was doing. Thomas repeated the motion and asked whether his mama did not know what it meant. Minjun looked at Kenta, who admitted that he had no idea either.

Minjun suggested that they all copy Thomas, so they could work it out together. Maintaining his usual serious expression, Kenta replied that he would rather find another way.

A short while later, Yukio came into the room. He froze in surprise at the sight of Thomas, Minjun and Kenta all trying to imitate the boy's strange movements. Unsure what to say, Yukio simply stared, while Kenta tried to stand up and threw out his back.

At that moment Daiki appeared in the doorway and looked at the bizarre scene with curiosity. Turning to Minjun, he simply told him to follow.

Startled, Minjun stood up and promised Thomas that he would be back soon. Worried, Thomas asked whether Papa was all right, and whether he could help. Minjun smiled and thanked him.

Still sitting on the floor, Kenta told Minjun quietly that there might be another way to convince Daiki to let Thomas visit the zoo.

Curious, Minjun asked what he meant.

Without hesitation, Kenta answered that Minjun would have to beg.

After a brief silence, Minjun followed Daiki into the library.

Clearly nervous, he began at once to explain that there had been a reason for his behaviour. He revealed that Thomas had asked whether rabbits and chicks were dead, and had then made a strange waving motion that had confused him. He explained that he had copied the movement because it reminded him of a game he had played as a child. Thomas had looked so happy, he added, and he had only wanted to make him smile, since the boy had never been to a zoo.

Daiki interrupted him with a serious expression and asked how long Minjun intended to keep acting that way.

Confused, Minjun asked what he meant.

Daiki then asked how long he planned to continue speaking in a language he could not understand.

Only then did Minjun realise that he had been speaking Korean the entire time. Embarrassed, he began nervously biting his nails.

Before he could say anything else, Daiki stepped forward, kissed him, and asked quietly whether he had calmed down.

Their moment was interrupted by loud knocks at the door. Thomas, accompanied by Kenta, insisted on coming inside. Despite Kenta's attempts to stop him, the boy ran straight to Minjun. The moment he reached him, he burst into tears and asked whether his mama was sad, or whether Papa had scolded her.

Picking him up, Minjun reassured him gently that he was not crying, and that Papa had not scolded him.

Reassured, Thomas finally calmed down, and Daiki picked him up.

A moment later Thomas asked whether they could go and see the rabbits and the chicks.

Daiki immediately turned a serious gaze toward Minjun, clearly wondering what Thomas was talking about. Nervously, Minjun looked to Kenta for help. Kenta looked deliberately away, pretending not to notice. Realising that Kenta had failed to explain any of it, Minjun felt utterly betrayed.

Noticing the exchange of glances, Daiki asked whether Minjun had something he wanted to tell him. Embarrassed, Minjun denied it.

Thomas insisted once again that he wanted to see the rabbits. Ignoring Minjun's attempts to change the subject, he declared that if Mama and Kenta would not tell Papa, then he would.

Both Minjun and Kenta froze in panic.

Suspicious, Daiki asked whether the place Thomas was talking about was the same place he was thinking of.
