Synopsis
Bridget has washed the linens of Highrove since she was five, the winter the king's men burned her pack to ash. Lye soap eats her hands raw because lye is the only thing that hides what she smells like, and a swallowed root keeps the beast under her ribs asleep every full moon. Then King Garrick returns from the border wounded, catches her wrist at the high table, and tells her she does not smell like fear. Three days later, in the freezing dark of the cellars, a drunk general squeezes her windpipe until the cage inside her finally breaks open.
