Chapter 12The Climb to the Grave

The alpha finally introduced himself properly. His name was Yunshu.

After crying for nearly half an hour, Baitang asked where he had come from. Yunshu explained that he came from a world with only two genders. In his original life, he had been an oncology surgeon. Due to overwork, he had died suddenly, and for reasons he still couldn't understand, awakened inside Jang Yunsu's body.

To prove he wasn't lying, he brought out a large piece of meat and demonstrated his surgical skills by stitching it together with incredible speed and precision.

As for why he had helped Baitang, the answer was simple. Anyone who had seen his situation would have wanted to help. There was another reason as well. Baitang reminded him of a young patient he had once treated but ultimately failed to save. The existence of parallel worlds only reinforced how much that patient and Baitang resembled each other.

Baitang immediately rejected the comparison. In his opinion, they looked nothing alike. More importantly, Yunshu was far more handsome than the original Yunsu.

Yunshu then told him something unexpected. He didn't want to trap Baitang in a marriage. If one day Baitang met an alpha he truly loved, Yunshu wanted him to be free to pursue that happiness. Baitang responded by asking what would happen if Yunshu fell in love with another omega instead. Yunshu reassured him that he didn't need to worry. Even if they divorced someday, he would always continue to care for him.

Although his life had improved dramatically since Yunshu's arrival, Baitang was still afraid to get his hopes up.

Later, while preparing to walk Hongtang, Baitang suddenly imagined a terrifying nightmare. In the dream, the old Yunsu had returned. Angry that Baitang had become so comfortable after only a few months of peace, the alpha threatened to teach him a lesson. He promised to kill Hongtang and send the beloved dog to the underworld alongside the birds Baitang had once tried to save. Terrified, Baitang cried and begged for mercy.

Fortunately, Hongtang's cheerful barking woke him from the nightmare. When Yunshu arrived, Baitang felt overwhelming relief that he hadn't disappeared. The alpha gently comforted him and promised that he would never leave him behind.

That same day, they visited the registration office so Yunshu could legally change his name. Now that Baitang knew the truth, there was no point continuing to use the original Yunsu's identity. Although he could have gone alone, Yunshu wanted Baitang present for such an important moment. They even took a new identification photo. Baitang was fascinated not only by the official name change from Yunsu to Yunshu, but also by how handsome Yunshu looked in his new photo.

During one of his classes, Professor Shu gave a lecture that left the students inspired to contribute to the omega community. After class ended, Baitang stayed behind to talk with him. Excitedly, he explained that the cockroach Jang Yunsu was gone, and that the man living in his body was actually Yunshu, an oncology surgeon who had answered nearly every medical exam question correctly and could stitch meat together at incredible speed.

His excitement soon turned into worry. What if someone discovered the truth and performed an autopsy on Yunshu?

Professor Shu reassured him that nobody would believe such a story. What concerned him more was that Baitang still seemed afraid of Yunshu despite everything he had done. That wasn't fair. The blame belonged entirely to the original Yunsu. If Baitang truly wanted to overcome his fear, Professor Shu suggested a desensitization treatment.

That afternoon, Yunshu picked him up from school. Even though he was busy studying for his post-graduate entrance exam, he still prioritized Baitang's safety. He had even bought him a dessert to enjoy on the way home. Baitang brought up the desensitization therapy and asked if Yunshu would accompany him. Of course, Yunshu agreed.

However, before starting the treatment, there was somewhere else he wanted to take him. The destination was none other than Jang Yunsu's grave.

They climbed to a remote section of the cemetery. By the time they reached the top, Baitang was exhausted. Seeing how tired he looked, Yunshu began to think bringing him there had been a terrible mistake. Despite his exhaustion, Baitang refused to turn back. When Yunshu offered to accompany him the rest of the way, Baitang declined. Part of him feared that if Yunshu got too close to Yunsu's grave, he might somehow disappear and return to his original world. If that happened, Baitang didn't think he could bear being alone again.

So he continued by himself until he finally reached the grave. Standing before the symbol of all his suffering, he tried to remain strong, but the emotional impact was overwhelming. His legs nearly gave out beneath him. Fortunately, Yunshu had followed from a distance and caught him before he collapsed.

Baitang stared at the grave in shock. At last, Jang Yunsu was truly gone. The man who had caused him so much pain had been buried and left behind forever.

After a few minutes, Yunshu treated a small scrape on Baitang's forehead. That prompted Baitang to ask a question he had long wanted answered. Why was he so kind to him?

Yunshu told him about the patient he had mentioned before. For three years he had treated a young boy named Shan. The boy lost his hair, and eventually even his left leg. On the very day Yunshu arrived in this world, the patient had just turned fifteen years old and the cancer had spread throughout both lungs. Even now, Yunshu didn't know whether the boy was still alive.

Wanting to brighten his mood, Baitang decided to make cupcakes for him. This time, he would use exactly the amount of sugar that Yunshu liked. Back home, they worked together in the kitchen. While preparing the cupcakes, Yunshu became a tireless mixing machine, stirring ingredients without pause.

Later that day, they were scheduled to meet Professor Shu for therapy. Baitang hoped everyone would enjoy the cupcakes. Because he kept talking about Professor Shu so enthusiastically, Yunshu found himself feeling slightly jealous.

When Professor Shu and his husband arrived, they immediately noticed the bandage on Baitang's forehead. Naturally, their first assumption was that Yunshu had somehow injured him. Unfortunately, he had already earned a reputation as a potentially violent alpha. Baitang quickly defended him and explained what had actually happened.

Regarding the cemetery visit, Professor Shu felt it had been an aggressive step for someone at Baitang's stage of recovery, though thankfully it hadn't caused any lasting harm. The goal of the new treatment was to help Baitang establish healthier responses to fear and anxiety. To achieve that, Yunshu's cooperation would be essential.

Before they could begin, however, they wanted to perform a hypnosis assessment on Yunshu to determine whether he posed any threat to Baitang. Yunshu agreed immediately, provided the process was scientifically sound. Dr. Kim was present as well.

The session began with several questions. Did he have any hidden motives? Was he approaching Baitang for another purpose? Would he ever hurt him? Yunshu answered every question with a firm and unwavering no. The only downside was that hypnosis could leave him with temporary dizziness and headaches afterward.

Baitang felt guilty watching him go through the process. The omega remembered undergoing hypnosis himself when he was twelve years old. Knowing Yunshu was enduring discomfort to help him made him grateful all over again that he had arrived in this world.
