Chapter 13Snow on Mount Maui

Left with no other option, Yashiro agreed to train Yukina, much to Aki and Sarah's dismay.

That night he was busy training all three girls, with Aki and Sarah livid about being excluded from the mission he was about to go on with Yukina — and with Aki thrown flat on the ground for her wrong assumptions about Yashiro becoming Yukina's benefactor in some other sense entirely.

Sarah followed suit and found herself wide open for a counterattack. Yukina came the closest of the three to beating him, and he turned the tables on her almost instantly.

After being informed of what she needed to do in future situations, Aki and Sarah went over to Yukina to make her let go of Yashiro. Seeing that she was not going to yield, Yashiro forced the issue and threw all three girls away at once.

Eventually he relented and agreed to have Sarah and Aki tag along after all. He was not remotely excited about it. Aki's happy-go-lucky mode activated immediately.

Aware that her sensei's job was a big one, Sarah argued that he ought to get some protective gear for their current training, especially since they were using actual weapons. That did not make any sense to Yashiro, since this training was meant to produce people who could eliminate other people, but he agreed to use them anyway.

After being beaten thoroughly by their sensei, Aki still could not grasp the fact that Yashiro was a sadist before he disappeared on them, having first informed her what time she was to be up in the morning.

After Sarah parted ways with her friends, she found Yashiro offering to accompany her home. Fortunately for her, she had told her father she would be late, because the road had been blocked for repairs.

That gave them enough time for a brief conversation in the car. Sarah asked that he brief her at least on what their mission was going to be, since she and the other girls would be accompanying him. She explained that she was asking out of consideration for Aki and Yukina, who did not seem to care about it at all — and before Yashiro could respond to any of that, he noticed a car following them.

So he took another route and lost his pursuers. While he was assuring her that the three of them were still far too green to understand, he began to assume that the people at the party were also heading for Hokkaido, where they would be disrupting the status quo by selling substances and weapons. Something about that did not make sense to him either, because he could not understand why the Half-Dragon would bother targeting Storm at all.

Given that he could not trust the Pincers' claims, Yashiro concluded he was going to have to rely on the three girls.

Meanwhile, Wedge was having dinner with an old woman who considered the Half-Dragon's involvement in the ongoing crisis in the dark world magnificent. That was not the end of it. She also expressed how very interested she was in what E4 could actually do to evolve the human body — to the point where a person might live forever.

Seeing that he did not even have hands to eat with, she instructed him to lap his food up off the plate, in exchange for which she would become his new E3 financier in Storm's place.

To her surprise, Wedge did not take those words kindly at all. He used his ability to choke the old woman out of her dear life.

The guards advanced at the sight, and then, instead of defending her — she was known as India Ink — one of them took her head off her shoulders. Before she could revive, the other guards crushed the head flat, finishing her for good, in favour of serving Wedge from that point on.

One of those guards, who were all his students, argued that eliminating Ink had been necessary as part of getting rid of anyone who cooperated with the Half-Dragon, all in order to restore the status quo between the dark lords.

Two days later, Yashiro and the girls arrived at Mount Maui in Hokkaido.

Sarah was uncertain whether they had enough provisions to camp outside. Aki assumed they were plenty. Yashiro crushed her hopes and dreams in the blink of an eye. Worse yet, Yukina began complaining about how hungry she was, which resulted in Yashiro ruling that none of them would settle down to eat until sunset.

Having assured Sarah that he had everything covered, Yashiro asked Yukina to identify whose turf they were standing on, and she did it instantly: the dark lord who owned this garden was one she had assisted years ago, who had wanted a rival eliminated after he had wreaked havoc in the area. Yashiro complimented her for it.

When Aki wondered aloud who this Rupturing Star Charts was, Sarah and Yashiro informed her that he was one of the top three dark lords in Hokkaido, and that his ether perception allowed him to control the weather.

Aki assumed from this that Yashiro intended to go and enlist the man's aid. Yashiro told her she was wrong, and threw a snowball at her.

More importantly, he warned the girls that the Nephilim were active in this area. And since none of them knew how Star Charts operated on his own turf, or what his relationship with the Half-Dragon was, they were to be cautious, or they would be finished.

Beyond that, Yashiro did intend to meet Star Charts and discuss matters with him peacefully. That alerted Sarah to the fact that her sensei had no actual plan, and he ignored her, because he believed an acquaintance was waiting for them in an abandoned church further ahead.

He did not have much hope that things would go smoothly with that man either.
