Chapter 6Swords in the Shopfront

Hearing someone scream his name, Denji turned around to see Yoru half crushed by rubble. She fiercely insisted that she was not losing, and asked him whether he wanted to save her.

Standing up like the soldier he was, Denji agreed, then turned to face the devil himself.

Examining the woman and noticing her large chest, Denji called her chest woman again. Yoru quickly corrected him, identifying her as the Falling Devil and acknowledging their opponent's overwhelming power.

Yoru demanded that Denji save her first. Surprisingly, the Falling Devil actually stepped back to allow it, explaining that she had no desire to fight them. The only thing she had come to do was plunge mankind into an abyss of terror.

To demonstrate, she ripped several skyscrapers out of their foundations and suspended them directly over the heads of a crowd of civilians.

Enraged, Denji charged straight at her, and a voice suddenly echoed out of the Falling Devil's mouth. The voice claimed that Denji had not changed at all since their last encounter, and accused him of intentionally taking away someone precious despite knowing the agonising guilt it would cause.

Denji began to apologise profusely, but his body lost its gravity and floated away into the sky, effectively becoming a pawn for the Falling Devil.

On the ground, Asa took control of her body and noticed that she had just enough room beneath the rubble to form a finger gun. Yoru warned her that the resulting blast would injure them both, but Asa ignored the warning and fired away. Miraculously, she escaped without really suffering any damage.

Running now, Asa scrambled up the cliff of debris, leapt into the air and caught Denji before he floated up too far.

As the two of them started to float higher, Asa tried to calm Denji down, hoping to ease his panic so that they could regain enough weight to drop back down to the ground.

Denji refused, crying out that he did not deserve to be happy any more. If he really was inflicting on others the exact same tragic fate that he had always considered the worst thing ever to happen to himself, then he had no right to happiness.

Asa cut through his despair, confessing that she wanted to be the one to make him happy. She admitted that she did not really know how they would do it yet, but she promised that they would figure it out together.

Slowly moving in towards each other, the two of them then narrowly dodged a skyscraper hurled directly at them, which destroyed a few city blocks when it hit the ground.

Watching the Falling Devil levitate even more massive structures into the air around them, Asa told Denji that they had to stop her, because they were superheroes.

Tears started to well in Denji's eyes. Before he could even answer, Yoru retook control of the body.

She realised that while normal attacks to the Falling Devil's head had failed, combining the Tank Devil's power with her full arsenal might finally overwhelm her.

Yoru's arm extended and mutated into a massive heavy cannon, much to Denji's physical dismay. She packed the chamber with every single weapon she had forged so far, and then fired.

En masse, the entire volley eviscerated the body of the Falling Devil, who desperately attempted to regenerate. Each time she did, she was cut down again by the endless flow of weapons. Within seconds of the attack starting, her body was left as a sword-riddled corpse collapsed among the street rubble.

Dropping back in, Yoru and Denji hit the ground beside the pile of swords.

At first they thought they were safe, until they realised that the Falling Devil was not actually dead. Floating there with all of the blades around her, she taunted Yoru, asking whether she was satisfied. Then she pointed out a cruel truth. The fear of falling was innate to all living things, while war was only a messy human concept.

Intending to wound them, the Falling Devil sent her own swords whistling back towards them.

With an impaled leg, Yoru told Denji that she could not run, forcing him to scoop her up in a bridal carry to reach safety. He begged her to create a motorcycle, but Yoru snapped back that she needed a physical bike to transform first.

A few blades shot in and almost hit them. Yoru shot them out of the sky before Denji kicked in the door of a nearby store and rushed her inside. He kicked the door shut behind them, and surprisingly the shop's front door managed to temporarily halt the barrage of swords.

Thinking they were trapped inside the building, Yoru told Denji she was going to unleash her second ultimate weapon, and rested her hand on his head.

The store owner just stood there. He and Denji stood there somewhat confused until Asa took control and explained that Yoru intended to turn him into a weapon.

Surprisingly, Denji actually accepted his fate. He figured that becoming a badass weapon might finally pay for some of his sins.

Yoru, having grown unexpectedly attached to the boy, stood there unable to decide what to do.

In a flash, the door exploded from the constant driving force behind the falling weapons, and a large spear stabbed Yoru clean through the head.

The violence was instantaneous. Along with Yoru being killed, Denji was skewered by a sword, and the innocent bystander beside them was fatally stabbed by several differing blades.

The Falling Devil sneered, casually mentioning that she thought she had held back, and joked about how terrifying the War Devil used to be in the ancient past. She glared down at Yoru's unmoving body, and the girl vanished into thin air.

Before the Falling Devil could even react, Yoru reappeared on her back, driving the same spear that had just hit her through the Falling Devil's body. Flicking her arm around, Falling retaliated with a point-blank blast that launched Yoru back into the roof of a nearby building.

Immediately reappearing next to her with a fused sword, Yoru eviscerated the Falling Devil, slicing her body apart at multiple points.
