Chapter 8The Book He Brought

The next morning, while watching Kiyo asleep, Yeri quietly said that promises no longer mattered, even though he had promised his client that he would kill him. He now wanted Kiyo to experience feeling special, perhaps for the first time in his life. Yet Yeri added ominously that Kiyo's brightest moment could also become his last.

Later, Kiyo returned to work in the library. A guard asked how he was feeling, and Kiyo said that he was much better. While working, Kiyo noticed that he felt strangely lighter than before. He thought that perhaps recovering from his illness was why he felt that way. He also remembered the comforting dream he had had, and vaguely recalled hearing Yeri's voice in it, though he wasn't sure whether it had truly been a dream or not.

Meanwhile, guards escorted Yeri to the visiting room. As he walked in, he noticed inmate 2089 leaving the area and wondered irritably why they always crossed paths. Pigeon mocked him, joking that even a punk like Yeri got visitors. Yeri told him coldly not to waste his time talking to him. A guard quickly ordered 2089 back to his cell.

It was then revealed that the same man who had hired Yeri had come to visit him. Yeri asked politely whether everything was all right with his face, and the man replied that he was fine. He had just happened to run into someone he didn't want to see on the way there.

He changed the topic, commenting that this prison seemed much better than the previous one, and remarking that even criminals appeared to have different social classes. He handed Yeri the book he had requested.

Yeri thanked him, and the man warned him that Han Kiyo's father had powerful connections in politics and finance, meaning there was a real chance he could interfere with the case. He also mentioned rumors that Kiyo had already been exploited for sexual favors.

Hearing this, Yeri immediately objected, saying that as far as he could tell, Kiyo hadn't been involved with anyone. The man instantly questioned how Yeri could possibly know something like that. Yeri awkwardly explained that he had only meant that he had been trying to earn Kiyo's trust in order to complete his mission properly, and that during that process he had realized Kiyo was actually very inexperienced and naive.

The man asked if there was anything he should be worried about. Yeri denied it and explained that he had only requested the book because there were things about the case he still didn't understand. The man said that Yeri was the expert here, so he trusted his judgment. However, he reminded Yeri not to forget to inform him once he decided to complete the contract. He also warned him that if he failed, the loss would be entirely his own, reminding Yeri that only he could truly set him free from prison. He then asked whether Yeri missed the outside world.

Later, during lunch, several prisoners watched the news on TV while Kiyo grabbed a cola from a vending machine. The news discussed the approval of the Proloc B drug. Hearing it, Kiyo realized that it was the same medication he had been taking.

Suddenly 2089 approached from behind, startling him so badly that he almost dropped the can. 2089 caught it for him and said that he had heard Kiyo was sick and had genuinely been worried about him. Then he secretly slipped something else into Kiyo's hand. When Kiyo looked down, he realized that it was a condom.

Kiyo blushed furiously while 2089 remarked casually that it would help him stay careful. He then hinted that Kiyo should already know what crime inmate 18818 had committed. Shocked, Kiyo asked how he knew it. 2089 leaned closer and replied that information like that didn't come for free.

Before the conversation could continue, the boss prisoner arrived. 2089 asked him to give them some privacy, but the boss prisoner refused. Angered, 2089 reminded him that he had already paid him with cigarettes and other favors in exchange for leaving Kiyo alone for a while. The boss prisoner grabbed him by the collar, but before things could escalate, the guards announced the end of lunch and ordered everyone back to their cells.

As Kiyo walked away, he realized that the other prisoners had only stopped bothering him because of 2089's influence. 2089 noticed Kiyo staring and told him that if he was so curious about Yeri, he should ask him directly. But, he added, someone like Yeri would never openly confess his crime.

Back in his cell, Kiyo thought about how everything in prison seemed transactional. He wondered why 2089 had given him the condom for free, and started overthinking whether it was because his pheromones were so strong. He also nervously realized that he and Yeri had never used protection.

When Kiyo opened the cell door, he was startled to find Yeri already there. At the same time, Yeri was equally surprised to see Kiyo return so early. Both secretly thought that the other had arrived too soon. Yeri hurriedly hid the book he had received earlier, while Kiyo panicked over where to hide the condom before Yeri noticed it and started teasing him.

Trying to act natural, Kiyo asked about the book. Yeri said casually that a friend had given it to him. Curious, Kiyo asked what kind of book it was and why it wasn't available in the library. Yeri refused to show it to him, claiming that it wasn't suitable for children. Kiyo immediately assumed that it was some kind of explicit magazine and became embarrassed.

Suddenly Yeri noticed a strange scent on Kiyo and immediately grew suspicious. He grabbed Kiyo closer and accused him of wandering off, only to come back smelling like another alpha. He said teasingly that their little chick couldn't even wait anymore and had already started looking for dirty fun elsewhere. Kiyo desperately denied it and explained that 2089 had only tried to give him something, but Yeri refused to listen and kissed him instead.

Just as the mood intensified, guards suddenly announced a surprise inspection. Both froze instantly. Yeri panicked about hiding the book, while Kiyo worried about the condom.

As guards ordered all inmates into the hallway, Yeri quietly told Kiyo to hide the book, since he worked in the library and could make an excuse for having it. Kiyo asked nervously if the contents were really that extreme, and Yeri insisted jokingly that it was definitely not meant for innocent kids like him.

Then Kiyo admitted that he also had something to hide, and asked Yeri to cover for him using his infirmary position. When Yeri asked what it was, Kiyo reluctantly handed him the condom. Yeri stared at it in shock before glaring at Kiyo, internally wondering what his little chick had been doing with something like that.

A guard noticed the item and questioned Yeri about it.
