Chapter 4What the Lawyer Wrote Down

Then, after everyone left, I called my lawyer. "I need you to help me arrange my estate."

My lawyer and my friend Kyle Chen arrived at the same time. Seeing me lying in bed, face ashen, movements weak, Kyle's anger erupted immediately.

"Those bastards. They're absolute bastards. How could they treat you like this? I'm going to settle the score with them."

I stopped him. During this time pursuing Sophia Caldwell, I hadn't met many good people, but Kyle was the exception. He always stood firmly on my side. No matter what happened to me, he was always the first to help. Kyle was also, besides Sophia, the second person who knew about my system.

At this moment, I told Kyle about my plan to switch conquest targets. Laid it all out.

"You mean you're finally getting free of that heartless woman?"

I nodded.

Kyle jumped up excitedly. "That's amazing. The system finally did something decent for once. You should have dumped Sophia Caldwell ages ago. Let her suffer."

He made me laugh.

I looked toward the lawyer. "I want all the company shares in my possession, along with the company itself, given to Kyle. As for the remaining cash, please donate it to children in impoverished areas."

The lawyer wasn't surprised after hearing this, but still followed protocol to ask, "What about your family? You're not leaving them anything?"

Kyle's eyes reddened when he heard that. "I'm just holding it for you temporarily. Wait until you come back with your new identity. Then I'll return everything to you. You have to come back."

I nodded.

Outside the door, Sophia walked in. "Come back from where?"

Her eyes were full of suspicion. I didn't know how much she'd heard.

I hurried to explain. "I told Kyle that after I recover, I'm planning to travel abroad for a while. He's telling me to remember to bring him back souvenirs."

After hearing this, Sophia showed no emotion, just looked doubtful for a moment before returning to normal. "Remember to get examined in a bit."

I breathed a sigh of relief.

Sophia personally took me for the examination. I knew what this examination was for — to see if my heart was suitable for donation.

Walking out of the examination room, I ran right into Ethan Rivers. He sat in a wheelchair, his frail figure draped in thin clothes, his face deathly pale, coughing occasionally. Just sitting there made people pity him.

"I heard from my sister-in-law that they found a donor heart for me," Ethan Rivers suddenly spoke. "You're happy for me, too, aren't you?"

I looked at those dark eyes, so bright and seemingly innocent. But beneath them lurked deep malice. Did he really know nothing?

Happy? I smiled with some sincerity. "I'm very happy."

Though it wasn't the gloating he expected. Ethan Rivers seemed slightly displeased. He deliberately raised his hand casually. "That's wonderful. Then — you've always had prejudice against me. I thought you didn't want me to have the surgery."

On the ring finger of that hand, a men's couple ring was very prominent, matching the one on Sophia Caldwell's hand.

I couldn't pretend not to see it. My eyes locked onto it.

Ethan hurriedly removed it. "I'm sorry. This was a gift from my sister-in-law when I returned to the country. It doesn't mean anything special. I originally wore it on my middle finger, but because I've been sick, my hands got so thin it only fits on my ring finger now. You're not mad at me, are you?"

After speaking, Ethan coughed violently.

Sophia emerged from the examination room. Seeing exactly that scene, she rushed over quickly, one hand pushing Ethan back, shouting at me, "What are you doing to Ethan? He's a patient right now. Why are you giving him a hard time?"

I watched her emotions surge so dramatically and laughed bitterly at myself. So even someone cold and rational could lose control just because Ethan Rivers coughed a few times. She didn't even ask what happened, instinctively casting me as the villain.

This was my wife. The person I'd once wholeheartedly loved. My heart felt squeezed by something, suffocating.

Ethan kept coughing. "Sister-in-law, don't be angry. He didn't do anything. He just saw the ring on my hand and said a few things. Don't blame him for this."

Sophia's expression grew even darker. "The transplant date is set. Your petty tricks behind the scenes are useless. I won't let anything interfere with Ethan's surgery."

She thought I didn't want to donate my heart, so I was deliberately aggravating Ethan's condition. But I didn't bother explaining. Explanations were pointless anyway. Sophia's ears couldn't hear anything else.

I just silently returned to my hospital room and closed the door.
