Chapter 6Footsteps on the Roof

Slicing part of Norisuke's hand off, Damo called out to Hato to join them.

Back in the entrance room of the house, Josuke warned Hato that if she went into that room, Damo would kill her. She had to prepare herself for a fight, something she could not even begin to comprehend.

In the lounge, Damo kept calling.

Unable to bear the thought of his children being murdered, and pushed past his breaking point, Norisuke made a stunning confession. Josefumi Kujo, he said, might actually be Josuke. He explained to an incredulous Damo that the boy had been found completely naked and devoid of his memories near the same shore where Kira had died. He knew he was a stand user, and he knew the Locacaca's equivalent exchange had been involved. All he had done, though, was invite Josuke into his home.

Then the door to the living room swung open, and despite everything Josuke had just told her in the hallway, Hato walked into the room.

Instantly, Vitamin C's power took over, softening her body and allowing Damo to effortlessly kick her out of the way. Making his way into the entrance room of the house, Damo finally confronted what remained of Josefumi Kujo. Dropping some information on Josuke as he came, he let him know that he had fused parts of himself with the deceased body of Kira — something that baffled Damo, since he had not even known the fruit had those capabilities.

Seeing Josuke hit the floor, Damo immediately unleashed Vitamin C, who came out swinging. Doing the same, Josuke commanded Soft and Wet to counterattack. But before a single punch could land, its hands were manipulated by the softening effects of Vitamin C. With no form of protection left, Damo closed in himself and landed a few brutal punches that pasted Josuke's body all over the wall.

As he collapsed, Josuke flicked out a few bubbles that surprisingly managed to connect with and break off Damo's shades. Fascinated by this revolutionary new application of the Locacaca fruit, and by how it had mixed both stand abilities together, Damo sadistically sliced out Josuke's liver, just as he had done to Kira in the past. He even mocked Josuke, informing him that this was exactly how he had killed Kira, before straightening out the thousand-yen note in order to slice Josuke's throat.

Then Damo spotted something impossible land outside the entrance window.

Turning, he could do nothing but stand there in a cold sweat as Hato, no longer under the effect of his stand, slowly rose to her feet. Confused, he questioned whether Josuke had used a bubble to carry her safely up and out through the house's chimney.

Unable to comprehend this betrayal, and completely heartbroken, but fuelled by an intense and righteous fury, Hato awakened her stand. With a flick of her stiletto, she punched a hole through the glass and drove her elongated heel directly through Damo's neck. With tears in Hato's eyes, Josuke explained that until Damo had betrayed her, she had never once stopped believing in him.

Retracting her heel, Hato then continued to stab through the glass screen from a distance, hitting Damo all over and causing him to flee, afraid, into the lounge. He pleaded with her that he really had loved her and had always been going to turn her family back, but the time for mercy was long gone. Hato used her extended heel to scale the outside of the estate in order to finish the fight.

Inside the foyer, Josuke rapidly evaluated their situation. Damo had to have come here alone. The network of rock humans trafficking the Locacaca was incredibly small, and Damo was not just their leader — he was the last one left alive. Josuke warned the suffocating smuggler to leave the premises immediately, pointing out that Hato would defeat him if he stayed.

But Damo, staring back at this bizarre hybrid of Kira and Josefumi, refused to back down. He gleefully reflected on just how incredibly profitable this new, resurrecting strain of the Locacaca fruit was going to be for him, completely confident that he could still outsmart and defeat Hato. What he really needed to do was find the grafted Locacaca branch and preserve it.

Cutting through his thoughts, Hato's footsteps echoed across the roof and started to make him sweat. He figured she was trying to locate him and finish him off with her stand, but he dismissed her confidence as moronic bravery. Scrambling over to the fireplace, Damo rummaged through a toolbox and pulled out a lighter. He grabbed Norisuke's heavily softened body, layered the clothes and hair with his fingerprints, and set him alight.

He was certain that Hato was approaching the chimney, so he would use her father's burning body to pull her back inside his range. As the flames took hold, Vitamin C's handprints began hitching a ride to the outside world, drifting upwards on the ash and smoke from the burning Norisuke. Hearing her father's agonising screams and seeing the smoke rise, Hato was baited right towards the end of the chimney.

Damo gleefully declared his victory, but the celebration was cut short when a massive spike suddenly crashed down through the ceiling, impaling him directly through the skull.

At that exact moment, a few of Josuke's bubbles floated their way out of Damo's pocket, pulling Josuke's liver out of the pocket as well. Josuke had hidden his own bubbles inside the bloody liver that Damo had sliced out of him earlier, using them to perfectly track and signal the smuggler's exact position to the roof.

Without any hesitation, Hato drove her extended heel down again, impaling Damo through the roof and forcing him to release his stand. As Vitamin C's grip finally released, everyone in the Higashikata family instantly snapped back to normal. Everyone except Joshu, who was nowhere to be found.

Outside, Josuke spotted the retreating figure of the rock human and gave chase, relentlessly tracking him through the streets until he finally cornered him in an alleyway. Desperate and bleeding out, Damo pathetically begged for his life, even trying to team up with him by reminding him of Holly and the devastating illness that only the fruit could cure. But Josuke did not hesitate. Soft and Wet delivered an unceremonious, devastating punch straight to Damo's head, shattering the rock human and finishing him off once and for all.

Standing over the defeated remains of his enemy, Josuke finally held the truth about himself. He was Josefumi Kujo.

Parked nearby in an alleyway, watching silently from the shadows, was Jobin, who had witnessed every single second of Damo's demise.

Meanwhile, far away from the chaos of the Higashikata estate, the gears of a prison door opened.

Inside the walls of the infamous prison, a woman was undergoing her final release procedures. The guards handed her back her personal belongings, along with the meagre wages she had earned for her labour over the last fifteen years, which amounted to something like four and a half thousand US dollars. After changing back into civilian clothes, the woman slipped a hidden phone out from between two cards in her deck.

Calling someone, she asked them to come and pick her up, explaining that she wanted her sudden release to be a complete surprise to the rest of the family. As she slid the phone back between the cards, it became clear that the person she had been calling was her own son, Jobin.

This woman was Kaato Higashikata, the fifty-two-year-old wife of Norisuke.
