She had just seen her go into that shop.
Inside, a man stood with something in his hand and demanded to know where the hell Manman had been in the middle of the day, because she had kept him waiting. He said she had been playing the fool all day. He asked her why she didn't hurry up and bring him the money, and why he should have such bad luck as to have a sister like her.
From the doorway Su Fu watched, and understood that this was where the wound on Manman's body had come from.
A baby was crying somewhere behind them, and the crying bothered the man; he said it was already too much and that it was annoying.
Su Fu was very angry. She said that he was a scoundrel, and then she shouted that enough was enough.
The brother changed his attitude at once. He asked the lady what she could offer him, and remarked that her figure was well proportioned, and that if a man played with it he could feel very good.
Su Fu looked at him very seriously and told him to shut his mouth.
Then she started hitting him.
The man told her that she was a — and that he had nothing against her, and asked her why she was hitting him. Manman called out, "Sister Fu!" but Su Fu went on hitting the stupid man, and Manman said, half under her breath, that she was very good at it now.
"Stop," the brother said. "Stop hitting me."
Su Fu told him that from this moment on, if he ever hit his sister again he would receive a beating he would never forget. She had studied Muay Thai abroad for six years.
The brother told her that it wasn't his fault, because somebody had told him to do it.
Su Fu took out her phone. She had known it wasn't that simple; maybe he had something to do with that vicious Su Li. She showed him a photograph on the screen and asked whether that was her.
"Yes," he said. "That's her."
Su Fu rolled her eyes and said that it really was her.
Then she turned to Manman and asked her what her plans were for the future.
Manman said she just wanted to raise her daughter well. She was her niece, really, but she didn't want her to end up in an orphanage, because her sister couldn't take care of her.
Su Fu pointed at the man on the floor. There were a lot of bastards like that, she said, causing problems every day. Was that the environment she considered right for her daughter to grow up in?
Manman looked distressed.
"I'm going home," Su Fu told her. "Think about it. Everybody has their own life and it isn't my place to interfere." But she was sure Manman would understand.
She walked out of the shop. The beaten brother stayed where he was, staring after her; and when Su Fu looked back at him he almost died of fright. Only when she had turned her back on him did he mutter that she should just wait and see.
It was already night when she came in and called out that she was back.
Lulu came running out and asked the big beauty why she had taken so long, because the little beauty had missed her. Su Fu stroked her hair and told her she was a good girl.
The little detective was there, and so was the little programmer. Su An told his mom that Su Gu wouldn't let him play all the games, and his mom told him that his brother had won the professional league and was the best player in this family.
Lulu wondered where Su Zi and Su Ji were, and the little detective said that Su Zi was in the studio working on a new invention and Su Ji was practising his portraits.
Gan Luo welcomed her in and told her there was chicken soup that night.
The little doctor announced that the dehydration surgery was about to begin. His mother took him by the ear and told Su Lian not to cause trouble for Uncle Gan Luo in the kitchen.
Then her phone rang. It was an unknown number. Su Fu picked it up and wondered who could be calling her at this hour, and told herself it had better not be somebody from the Su family.
The voice on the other end was Ji Yansi's. He told Miss Su that there were some other problems with the car, and asked her to please come over; he would send her the address in a moment.
Su Fu got a little scared, because it was him. She got her purse ready at once, telling herself that a big shot like Ji Yansi wouldn't joke with her, so she had better go fast.
Gan Luo asked her where she was going, because dinner was ready.
"Something's come up," she said. "I'll be right back. It shouldn't take long."
Gan Luo had done a lot for her already, and she would rather he never found out about the compensation, because she would take care of it herself and he would only end up blaming himself.
The little doctor came over and put something into his mommy's hands. It was some hot chocolate, he said, for her belly. She downed it all in one gulp and thanked her shiny baby.
Then she left the house.
The little doctor asked the little detective whether it was true that their mother had gone to see that uncle.
The little detective told him not to worry. According to his observation, his mom would definitely go and see that man — and soon they would have a dad.
