Chapter 13An Apple Against the Moon

The young man's mother arrived with apples and said that her son had made everything there, and that their lives had improved because of it. Worried, she asked whether the boy had caused trouble, but Aronian said that his results had been incredible.

The director thought to himself that he had only seen a talent like this young man's once before, in the scripture of Gaia.

Long ago, humanity had been ruled by tyrannical monsters. Then a genius created the arcane arts and, along with his friends, saved humanity from extinction. The day of this saint's birth became liberation day, and everyone celebrated the victory. In the scripture of Gaia, that man is known to all as the legendary first hero.

His mother called the man a saviour, but Louis remembered that there were no heroes in the legends. Aronian then said, with a serious look, that the hero appeared in a very different way in the stories.

He was a man with black hair and black eyes, which left Louis and his mother shocked. The director revealed that this was a great secret known only to the elite of humanity.

Despite saving everyone, a madness had lived in the hero's heart that wanted only to destroy everything. The hero took down his own allies, and that became humanity's first nightmare. This inner madness was like a curse that consumed the soul of its possessor from within.

Louis was shocked by the revelation, and wondered whether his own madness had come from that time. Aronian explained that this was why, in all countries, people with black hair and black eyes are eliminated.

The director then touched Louis's head and asked whether he had thought he could fool everyone with just dye.

His mother despaired and said that it was she who had told the boy to dye his hair. Louis comforted her and told her to calm down, because everything was all right now. With a confident look, the young man said that if the director had wanted to get rid of him, he would have done so already.

Aronian smiled and said that he had resisted the madness, and that because of this he saw in him the qualities of a new hero. Mother and son were shocked by the revelation, and she asked whether he had really said a new hero.

The director took an apple and said that the world seemed peaceful, but that this was not quite the case. Holding the fruit, he explained that a great darkness lurked, and that seeing the boy had made him think. Aronian then held the apple up against the moon and said that the legends everyone knew were absurd. With a serious look, the grand master said that he wanted to guide the young man towards the future of humanity.

Suddenly the director threw the apple with impressive speed towards Louis, but the boy managed to catch the fruit with a quick reflex, showing his incredible skill. The grand master then revealed that thanks to Faye and Cain, Louis had passed the final exam. With that, he offered the young man the chance to receive his personal instruction at Candria Academy.

Louis asked with a smile whether the director was betting on him even if he went mad. The director stared at him with a serious look, and his eyes glowed with a purple and sinister energy. Suddenly the apple in the boy's hand was cut in half, leaving the young man very surprised. Aronian said, with that same serious look, that if that happened, he would get rid of the boy himself.

The next day a friend of the boy was shocked to learn that he had received a personal invitation. But Louis was worried about the academy's costs and the dormitory fees.

The young man wondered what his true connection was with the legendary first hero. He recalled the director asking whether he had thought he could fool everyone with just dye. He remembered the grand master's threat, and wondered how much he could trust his words.

He also questioned why his mother had been made to hear everything, and Aronian had said that she would be a burden if she did not know. Angrily, the boy shouted that his mother was not a burden to anyone, and glared at him with a furious look. The director explained that if his identity were exposed, his family would also be in great danger. Aronian then flew away, telling the young man to get stronger, because the real tests had only just begun.

With a determined look, Louis agreed that he needed to get much stronger no matter what.

Suddenly the orphanage children ran towards him, shouting his name with great joy. A little girl named Lana jumped into his arms, and the boy hugged her with a smile on his face. The little girl cried and asked whether he would come back, because she did not want to say goodbye to him forever. No way, she said. The boy comforted her and said that he would come back during the holidays, because that was his real home after all. The girl made a pinky promise, and the young man told her not to worry, because he would keep his promise.

One of the boys then announced that a noble's butler was calling him for an important conversation. The butler stood beside a carriage and confirmed his identity. He introduced himself as the butler of the Aurank family and handed over an invitation from the young master Cain.
