Chapter 9The Garment Bag

Saturday the 18th, I woke up at 5:40, because for seven months my body had been planning to.

Lorraine had stayed until one in the morning, on my couch.

She read Brooke's comments out loud in her hospital-intercom voice.

Then she'd gone home to sleep before a shift.

I lay there and listened to the furnace.

Then I made coffee and spread the folder out on the kitchen table, page by page.

At this hour, at Hollis Farm, the rental crew would have been setting out the last of the chairs.

The florist would have been loading two hundred white ranunculus into her van.

I had paid for those in July.

The doorbell rang at eleven.

Emma stood on my porch in sweatpants and Tyler's work jacket.

Her eyes were swollen.

She looked thinner than she had on Thursday.

Brides lose weight the week before.

Nobody tells you they can lose it in a day.

She was holding the garment bag.

Tyler waited in the car with the engine running.

He lifted one hand off the wheel at me.

"I got it out of the bridal suite last night," Emma said.

"Before they gave the room to somebody else."

"I can't keep it."

"Emma."

"Grandma says Dad's money paid for it."

"I'm not getting married in a dress that was bought with Grandma's money."

"It wasn't," I said.

"It was bought with mine."

"Come in."

She came as far as the kitchen and no farther.

She didn't sit.

She laid the garment bag across the back of a chair, carefully, like it might wake up.

The tag hung over the edge.

HADLEY, J. — PAID IN FULL

I took the 401(k) letter out of the folder and set it on the table in front of her.

Loan approved March 12 — Amount: $18,000

She looked at it.

She didn't pick it up.

"Tyler's grandmother flew back to Tucson this morning," she said.

"She didn't even get to see the barn."

"Dad says you're good with paper," she said.

"He says you can make paper say anything."

"That's literally your job, Mom."

"That is my job," I said.

"Then you understand why I can't just—"

"Emma."

"Did Brooke ever pay a vendor?"

"One?"

She opened her mouth.

She closed it.

"She was going to settle everything at the walkthrough," she said.

"With what?"

She didn't answer.

She looked at the tag instead.

Then she said something I don't think she meant to say out loud.

"Her card didn't go through at Stem and Vine."

"In August."

"She wanted to add the hanging flowers over the dance floor, and her card didn't go through."

"She said it was a bank thing."

"She said not to tell Dad."

"She hasn't answered my texts since Thursday."

We stood in my kitchen and listened to that.

Then she looked at me the way she used to at eight.

She'd break something and wait to see which way I'd go.

I wanted to put my arms around her.

I put my hands flat on the table instead.

Outside, Tyler tapped the horn, very lightly, the way you'd knock on a hospital door.

"I can't do this right now," Emma said.

"I can't do any of it right now."

She left the dress.

I hung it on the back of my bedroom door.

It had hung there for a month before the fitting.

At noon, Denise Kolb texted me.

I'm so sorry, Jill.

At 4:10, Lorraine texted: Don't look at Hollis Farm's Instagram.

I had already looked.

Congratulations Kayla & Jordan!

Their dream date opened up with 24 hours' notice and they said YES 🌾💛

The photo was the ceremony lawn.

White chairs.

The arbor I picked.

A girl in a short white dress, laughing under it, forty guests spread across two hundred chairs.

They looked very happy.

I hope they are.

I put the phone face down and sat with the dress for a while.

At 4:47, Rick texted.

It was the longest text he had ever sent me.

Mom's willing to drop it.

Cashier's check, $30,000, made out to her.

You bring it to her house in person and sign a repayment agreement so it's documented.

Otherwise it's felony theft, and Dr. Feld hears about it.

Your choice.

I read it at the kitchen table, next to the dress.

He had put it in writing.

Rick, who labels his Venmos.

He knew exactly where to aim, too.

I took a screenshot.

Then a second bubble came in under it.

Monday at five. Bring the check.
