Chapter 4The Locked Door

At 7:41 Monday morning, Brianna sent me a photo.

It showed the back lot of Hale Family Dental.

Eleven patients stood by the door in their coats.

Brent stood in front of them with my old key ring.

He was trying the keys one at a time.

He doesn't know which one, she wrote.

I typed back.

Brass Schlage, third from the clip.

Then I deleted it.

At 7:58, another photo came.

Brent was holding the ring upside down.

At 8:22, a third.

Dr. Hale's Lexus sat crooked across two spaces.

He was opening the door with his own key.

He'd carried that key for thirty years.

I'd never seen him use it.

At 9:05, Brianna sent a screenshot.

ChairSide — Payment declined — card ending 4471.

Behind the message, the schedule was a blank gray box.

Card 4471 paid ChairSide, $389 a month.

It also paid the Allegheny supply autopay.

Dr. H cancelled that card Thursday, she wrote.

He said nobody needed it now.

Nobody could see who was coming in.

So they guessed.

I made oatmeal.

I ate all of it.

Tuesday at 10:20, my phone rang.

It was Irene Dombrowski.

She is eighty-one.

I'd booked every appointment she'd made since 1995.

"Maureen, honey, it's Irene."

"I'm sitting on the curb outside your office."

"It isn't my office anymore, Mrs. Dombrowski."

"That's what the boy said."

She'd had a 10:00 for a crown.

Number nineteen, lower left.

It had been due back from the lab on Friday.

"They couldn't find me on the computer," she said.

"Then the young man came out to the counter."

"In front of everybody."

"What did he say?" I asked.

"He said, 'Our former manager walked off with the system.'"

"Then he said, 'It's all documented.'"

"'She was just the help.'"

She waited.

"Did you walk off with it, honey?"

"No, ma'am."

"I didn't think so."

"The doctor said come back next week."

"My son's leaving work to get me."

Behind her, a truck downshifted on the hill.

I knew exactly where she was sitting.

She'd be on the concrete curb by the handicap sign, the one that wobbles.

She'd be holding her good wool coat across her lap.

She always dressed too warm for the dentist.

I could have told her who to call.

I could have told her where the lab box was, with her name on it in my handwriting.

Kemp's email was in my folder.

It said patients.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Dombrowski," I said.

"I can't help with the office."

"Oh, I know, honey."

"I just wanted somebody to know I was here."

I stayed on the line until her son's truck pulled up.

At noon, Gloria texted.

I'm out, Mo. 24 years.

Told him in the operatory.

He said hygienists are replaceable.

I told him I wasn't coming back.

At 1:30, Nate texted.

Dock at 2? Not about Hale. I have a list for you.

Allegheny Dental Supply keeps a warehouse off the bypass.

Nate was on the loading dock with a clipboard and two coffees.

He handed me one of them, and a sheet of paper.

It listed twelve offices within forty miles that were hiring.

"Front desk, mostly," he said.

"Two want a manager."

"Thank you."

He leaned on a pallet of glove boxes.

"Your old place called here this morning."

"I can't talk about my old place, Nate."

"You don't have to talk."

"Autopay bounced."

"Brent called, yelling."

"I put them on credit hold till somebody's on file."

"Who's on file now?" I asked.

"You are."

"Still."

He tapped the clipboard.

"He kept saying it's all documented."

"Kept saying it like I'd argued."

A forklift backed past with its beeper going.

Nate signed something for the driver.

Then he said it like he was talking about the weather.

"Funny thing, though."

"Some outfit called SRDP Holdings asked for your purchase history in August."

"Every order, back three years."

"Huh," I said.

I folded the job list into my purse.

I didn't ask who SRDP Holdings was.

I had a job to find.

In the Buick, I opened the Keystone email again.

Recredentialing packet due 10/10/2025 5:00 PM.

Three days.

The packet was under a Wawa bag.

The codes were on my phone.

The door key was third from the clip.

The crown was in a lab box in the back room.

None of that was written anywhere he'd read.

He'd told a waiting room it was all documented.

Documented where, Brent?
