Agott Arclem is one of the apprentice witches studying under Qifrey. She comes from the prestigious House of Arclem, a family known for serving as librarians in the Tower of Tomes for generations. From the very beginning, her goal has been clear. She wants to become a librarian in the Tower and prove that she is worthy of her family's legacy.
Agott is known as a quiet and withdrawn girl, but beneath that is a strong ambition. She struggles with her self-worth and cannot stand being seen as average. Because of this, she often pushes herself harder than anyone else and becomes frustrated with people she thinks are not taking magic seriously.
The clearest example of this appears when Coco first arrives at the atelier. Agott immediately looks down on her for being an outsider and for not understanding magic. She believes Coco does not belong in their world. Because of this, she forces Coco to take the Consent of the Crown, the very first test required to become a proper apprentice.
Basically, Coco takes on the challenge of the test and uses Agott's sylph shoes to try to reach the top of the Dota Range. But because of Agott, she ends up taking the test when the mountains are full of moisture. It's the hardest time of year, when it's believed that not even the sylph shoes can reach the top. Even though Coco still manages to pass the test, Agott just walks away without saying anything. This moment shows Agott's mindset clearly. She cannot tolerate anyone who cannot keep up with her.
Being one of the best, if not the best apprentice in Qifrey's atelier, Agott's biggest strength is obviously her talent. Agott is considered a genius when it comes to drawing magic. She is one of the most skilled apprentices in the atelier and is continuously working to improve. Because of her natural ability and effort, she can recreate refined spells just by observing them. Even magic used by experienced witches can be understood and repeated by her through careful observation.
But her strength is also connected to her past in a sad way. The Arclem family is one of the oldest and most respected witch families. Their lineage traces back to the apprentices who carried on the knowledge of the three wise ones. In their family, the head always becomes a librarian at the Tower of Tomes, and that role is passed down through generations. However, Agott isn't an apprentice from the house of the first apprentices, so some people look down on her.
In this world, the Houses of Arclem and Rowenton are the first houses. They are given special knowledge after the Day of the Pact. Usually, the head of a house takes on a family member as an apprentice to keep the legacy alive, but that didn't happen with Agott. Agott is known as the black sheep of her family.
The biggest turning point of her past came during her formal debut. A rumor spread that she tried to pass off another person's magic as her own. Because of this, her family lost trust in her. Her work was already seen as average at best, and this incident pushed things further. In the end, she was not allowed to continue her training within the family and was sent away. Now, she's studying under Qifrey instead.
Her biggest motivation comes from this rejection. Agott wants to prove that she does not need her family's support. She wants to become a great witch on her own and succeed so much that her family will regret casting her aside. The person she wants to prove herself to the most is her mother, Adina Arclem, the chief librarian of the Tower of Tomes. The memory of being called average and being compared to her mother is a huge driving force that fuels Agott's hunger to grow. She wants to prove everyone wrong for not believing in her. Agott wants it so badly that she's even willing to destroy the seal she spent weeks working on, just because she finds out it won't impress her mother.
This is why she rushes everything to the point that it becomes dangerous. Agott constantly pushes herself to gain real experience and take on difficult challenges as quickly as possible. According to Qifrey, she focuses too much on what she has not learned instead of appreciating what she already can do. He worries that her need to grow quickly will cause her to stumble.
This mindset also explains her early relationship with Coco. At first, Agott sees Coco as someone beneath her. She believes there's nothing to gain from spending time with someone who cannot match her level. But over time, that view begins to change. The best example of this shift comes during their shared experiences. From escaping the Brimmed Caps' dragon to saving people together, Agott starts to recognize Coco as an equal, and someone worthy of being a witch.
One small but important detail shows this change. Even though Coco's magic made Agott's sylph shoes harder to control, Agott continued using them. This suggests that she actually liked Coco's magic.
When Loroga, another apprentice, told Coco about Agott's past, Coco didn't believe him. After all, she had watched Agott always busy drawing, and had seen all the seals she created herself. That's how Coco knows that Agott is the last person who would ever forgive someone for passing off another person's magic as their own.
One of Agott's most important moments of growth comes during an incident where Custas is trapped under a rock. At first, Agott sees this as an opportunity to prove herself. She wants to save him using her own magic, to show that she is exceptional. But things change when she remembers Olruggio's words about the purpose of her magic. That moment basically forces her to rethink everything. Instead of focusing on proving herself, she works together with Coco to save Custas. Perhaps for the first time, her magic is not about pride or validation, but about helping someone instead.
One interesting thing about Agott is her favorite seals. She likes seals that represent a dragon, a lion goat, a torch stag, and a scale wolf. They're only decorative and don't do much for magic. They just give spells the rough shape of the creatures they're named after. Unlike the practical seals witches usually learn, her favorites aren't very useful. They're basically decorations. Although most witches today only use these kinds of seals for doodles, Agott thinks they're beautiful.
Later in her story, Agott manages to impress her mother, but not because of her magic. She realizes that her favorite purely decorative spells can actually help make people feel at ease. Watching from a distance, Adina sees this and feels a sense of nostalgia, maybe even catching a glimpse of Agott's smile.
