Since they were his final patients of the day, Dr. Lin decided to speak with Yunshu privately. Yunshu agreed. At the same time, he hoped to confirm whether Dr. Lin truly was the friend he had known in his previous life.
Once they reached the hospital parking lot, Dr. Lin immediately confronted him. He accused Yunshu of pretending to be a perfect gentleman in public while secretly taking all his anger out on his partner behind closed doors.
Then Yunshu's question provoked Dr. Lin so much that he ended up receiving a powerful punch to the face. The reason was simple. Yunshu had asked whether he knew anything about the mysterious recovery of a patient at the Imperial Hospital who had previously been declared brain dead. That patient was him.
Dr. Lin assumed Yunshu was simply making excuses and pretending to be mentally unstable so he could avoid being held accountable. But that wasn't what Yunshu meant at all. He tried to explain that the diagnosis had been made by one of the Imperial Hospital's most respected specialists, and that the real Jang Yunsu had already died. The person standing there now wasn't him. In other words, he might have the same face as the original Yunsu, but he wasn't the same person.
Naturally, Dr. Lin thought everything he was saying sounded ridiculous. Yunshu went on about coming from another world, being reborn in Jang Yunsu's body, and living in a world where only two genders existed. After listening to all that nonsense, Dr. Lin suggested that he schedule a brain examination with the psychiatry department. As far as he was concerned, all this talk about reincarnation and different worlds was just an elaborate attempt to clean up his reputation. He didn't have time for such absurd stories. Before leaving, however, he warned Yunshu that if he ever hurt his omega again, he would take legal action.
Even though he had revealed his biggest secret and been labeled insane, Yunshu still needed Dr. Lin's help to prove he was telling the truth. To keep the doctor from dismissing him completely, he deliberately challenged him. And just as Yunshu expected, Dr. Lin took the bait.
The doctor prepared a medical examination using confidential materials and advanced medical knowledge. If Yunshu failed, he would have to admit that everything he said was a lie and stop wasting his time. To make sure there was no cheating, Dr. Lin removed every electronic device, unplugged the internet, and left only paper and a pencil on the desk. As someone who believed that all existence was rooted in matter and science, he had no intention of accepting the idea of soul reincarnation. He was determined to expose Yunshu.
Oddly enough, though, this new version of Dr. Lin felt different to Yunshu. Being around him gave him a strange sense of comfort.
When the allotted time ended, Dr. Lin reviewed the test and nearly lost his composure. Yunshu's score was unbelievably high. In fact, Yunshu even joked that the exam hadn't been particularly difficult.
That was when he repeated his claim. He wasn't Jang Yunsu. He had never truly suffered memory loss. Before arriving in this world, he had been a doctor.
At that moment, it felt as if Dr. Lin's brain had completely short-circuited. He desperately searched for another explanation, convincing himself that Yunshu must have spent an entire month secretly studying medicine. Even though he was now slightly more willing to consider the possibility of reincarnation, he needed time to process everything and organize his thoughts.
Seeing that Dr. Lin was finally beginning to believe him, Yunshu decided to leave. Right now, Baitang was more important.
When he arrived home, he found only Hongtang playing with the vacuum cleaner, while Baitang was busy doing household chores. Immediately, Yunshu frowned. They had already agreed that the omega would rest. Besides, the weather was cold and he could easily get sick.
Since Aunt Chen wasn't home, Baitang had simply gone outside to hang up the laundry. He hadn't intended to disobey anyone, and the way he explained himself, rather than immediately apologizing, showed that he was slowly improving.
Yunshu picked him up in his arms and reminded him that he didn't need to apologize for every little thing. Instead, he should pay attention to his own feelings. More importantly, Yunshu wanted to hear his beautiful voice more often. Deep down, however, Baitang still believed that an alpha could never truly care about his feelings.
Yunshu put warm socks on Baitang's feet to keep them from getting cold. When Baitang noticed the large bruise on Yunshu's face, he wanted to treat the injury himself. That small gesture was encouraging. Unlike before, he wasn't rejecting Yunshu quite as much. Little by little, he was beginning to accept him.
As their eyes met, Yunshu couldn't help thinking that Baitang was the most beautiful person he had ever seen. Suddenly, the omega sneezed. Immediately, he panicked and started apologizing. But Yunshu wasn't upset at all. He was worried that Baitang was getting sick. In a frenzy, he searched everywhere for the first aid kit. Completely distracted by Baitang's beauty, he failed to notice that the kit was right beside him. After giving him medicine and wrapping him up like a cozy little bun in blankets, Yunshu sent him back to bed to rest.
A few hours later, late at night, Yunshu continued studying for his medical licensing examination. Meanwhile, Baitang and little Hongtang were playing in another room. The omega tried to quiet the puppy so he wouldn't make too much noise.
Even so, Yunshu eventually entered the room. The moment he saw Baitang sitting on the floor, he immediately picked him up and carried him back to bed. He firmly asked him not to sleep on the floor anymore, otherwise he would be angry. Then he told Baitang that he needed to take off his clothes.
Hearing that, Baitang instantly froze. For a moment, he was convinced that Yunsu had returned to his old self. In the past, requests like that were never requests. He had never been allowed to refuse.
But Yunshu quickly stopped him. He wasn't asking him to strip. He only wanted him to remove his shirt before going to sleep. Yunshu would be in the next room, and Baitang could call him if he needed anything.
After Yunshu left, Baitang remained awake for almost an hour. He kept staring at the door, afraid that the cruel Yunsu he remembered would suddenly walk in and hurt him. Eventually, he fell asleep while silently wishing that Yunshu would never recover his memories, because if he did, his life would return to being a living hell.
Before going to bed himself, Yunshu decided to check on him. When he entered the room, he discovered that Baitang was burning with fever. The moment Baitang woke up and saw him, he instinctively pushed him away. He was terrified. He didn't want to be hurt.
Keeping his distance, Yunshu gently tried to calm him down, realizing that he had been trapped in a nightmare. Once Baitang understood it had only been a dream, he asked the question that always haunted him.
"Have you recovered your memories?"
Yunshu shook his head. "No. And I won't hurt you."
However, he did insist on taking him to the hospital. Tears streamed down Baitang's face as he refused. His entire body hurt, and large amounts of pheromones were being released. Whenever he had been sick in the past, the original Yunsu had simply abandoned him at the hospital and left him alone.
Yunshu comforted him while silently promising himself that he would erase every painful memory left behind by the former Yunsu and create a future where Baitang could finally be happy.
The next morning, noises outside the door woke Baitang up. As he recalled everything that had happened, he realized just how much Yunshu had changed after losing his memories. The alpha had even stayed awake all night taking care of him.
Before leaving for work, Yunshu had written him a letter. Inside, he explained where breakfast was, where Hongtang's food was stored, and reminded him to take his medicine. He had also taken the puppy out of the room, because he was afraid the dog might accidentally wake him.
Looking at the handwriting, Baitang noticed something strange. It was completely different from Yunsu's. Could amnesia really change a person's handwriting? Or was this man truly someone else?
