The first thing I saw after the sky cracked open was not a monster. It was a letter.
A bright white F floated over the head of the old man hiding behind a vending machine. A blue C spun above a cashier who was holding a mop like it was a spear. A glowing A hovered above a man on the second floor balcony, and everyone near him gave him so much space it looked like he had a disease.
Then I looked into the broken glass of a store window and saw my own rank. The letter S.
For two seconds, I felt like the luckiest idiot alive.
Then the screams started. The mall shook like a giant hand had grabbed it from underneath. The escalators snapped. The ceiling lights exploded one by one. A black gate opened in the center court, and from it crawled dogs with skin like wet coal and eyes like hot coins.
They did not bark. They laughed.
People ran in every direction, but the ranks above their heads turned panic into math. F-ranks were abandoned. D-ranks were pushed forward. C-ranks were shouted at and recruited. A-ranks were followed like walking shelters. S-ranks became instant legends.
One of them was Serena. The whole mall saw her when she stepped through the smoke with a silver spear in her hand and a calm face that made terrified people shut up. Her S-rank burned above her head like a small moon. Monsters rushed her, and she cut them down so fast the air popped.
Everyone cheered.
Nobody cheered for me, because before anyone could look up long enough to see the S over my head, my own screen appeared.
Passive awakened. Rank concealment. Display any rank lower than your actual rank.
At first, I thought the system had cursed me with the dumbest cheat in the world. Why would I want to look weaker when I had just rolled the kind of rank people built statues around?
Then three players with D-ranks cornered the old F-rank man behind the vending machine. They did not save him. They did not ask if he was okay. They ripped the backpack off his shoulder and laughed while he begged. One of them raised a broken pipe over his head.
A tiny red warning flashed above the attacker's wrist. Aggressor action detected. PvP protection reduced.
The attacker stopped for a moment, read it, then grinned, because the old man had no way to fight back anyway.
That was when I understood. The world had not become a game. It had become a trap, and I had just been given the perfect bait.
So I lowered my rank.
The S above my head folded in on itself like paper burning from the edges. It shrank into a dull gray F. Weak and pathetic. The kind of rank that made hungry people smile.
I picked up a cracked baseball bat from a sports store and walked straight toward the three D-ranks. One of them saw me and laughed so hard he almost dropped the old man's bag. Another pointed at my rank like he had discovered free food.
I did not say anything dramatic. I just dragged the bat across the floor and let it screech.
They spread out around me. The one with the pipe moved first. He swung at my head, and the moment his weapon crossed the invisible line between threat and attack, red sparks burst around his name.
Aggressor confirmed. PvP protection removed.
My fake F-rank vanished. My real S-rank returned, blazing above me like a golden sunrise that had decided to become violent.
His smile died before the pipe reached my face. I stepped inside his swing, snapped the bat into his ribs, then spun and kicked the second player through a glass jewelry case. The third tried to run, but that was adorable, because I had not even tested my first active skill yet.
Skill awakened. Shadow step.
I moved. Not ran.
One moment I was standing near the vending machine. The next I was behind him, watching his body keep running without his courage. I grabbed his collar, pulled him backward, and slammed him into the floor so hard the tile cracked in a spiderweb under his shoulders.
The entire mall went quiet except for the monsters still laughing in the distance.
The old man stared at me. The cashier stared at me. Even Serena looked down from the balcony, her silver spear dripping black monster blood. Above my head, the S-rank burned like a warning flare.
Then I smiled and turned it back into an F.
That was the moment I stopped trying to survive the apocalypse game. That was the moment I started hunting hunters.
