Chapter 2Ants Outside the Classroom

Elsewhere in the city, near the high school, Yoshida told Fumiko and Fami that they only had one month until the Death Devil descended.

In the time before that, he requested that Fami help them out with a few things. The Chainsaw Devil's last rampage had left a huge gap in Public Safety's staffing, and there was more work than there were people to do it.

After thinking on the proposal for a moment, Fami refused. She was on the school's planning committee for the festivities on Tokyo Revival Day.

Utterly disgusted with this, Fumiko could not believe she was prioritising school when humanity's existence was at stake. Yoshida offered to take her place on the committee so that she could help them, but Fami refused again, saying that she had friends on the committee.

Fumiko snapped. Should the Death Devil win, then it would not matter, because her friends would also be dead.

Unconcerned with their pathetic ramblings, Fami stood up and explained that she liked to enjoy new experiences. New food. New people. She had recently hung out with Asa and Denji, who were fun to be around, since they had dumbass faces. Being around these two was not exactly what you would call fun.

The group stood there in silence for a moment before it was interrupted by the arrival of Fami's two friends. They picked Fami up immediately and stole her away to plan the festival. Fumiko got up and asked Yoshida whether they should stop her from leaving, but he was still hung up on Fami's comment about him not being any fun.

Over in the destroyed part of the city, Yoru was having more fun with Denji, demolishing derelict buildings with her finger gun. Blown away by her level of devastation, Denji asked her to destroy another one.

Before she could fire, Asa regained control and pointed the finger gun at him.

Staring a nervous Asa down, Denji simply told Pochita that he had told him so.

Asa revealed that she had been able to kick Yoru out of her body, before switching it up and turning her own finger on herself. She quickly broke down into tears, repeating to herself that she could not do it.

Leaning in, Denji asked if she could stop aiming at him all the time. She flicked the finger straight back onto him and hit him with a hefty proposal. Either he killed her, or she would kill him.

Utterly flabbergasted, Denji could not understand what she was smoking.

Elaborating for his dumbass, Asa said she could tell that Yoru was planning something crazy, and that beating the Death Devil would not solve anything here. From what she could tell, it was something even worse than humanity's extinction.

Denji asked her why she was threatening him, then. She admitted that it was because she was too much of a coward to just shoot herself. Breaking down, she remarked that trying to be Yoru's friend had been a dumb idea. She was an idiot who had got duped.

Unable to wrap his own head around his ever-spiralling world of despair, Denji said he thought they could still be friends.

Refuting this, she again demanded that he take her out now, or she would shoot him. Grabbing a chair, Denji slammed it down, only just missing Asa as she fell over backwards.

He was confused, because she had dodged it, and he listened as she called him a murderer — even though, as Denji pointed out, she had wanted him to kill her a few seconds earlier.

Sitting there, Asa admitted that she was not mentally prepared to die.

Denji completely broke her spirit by telling her that since even someone immortal like him could never be ready to come back to life, he knew that nobody was truly ready to die.

Slumping to the floor, Asa confessed her guilt for all of the people Yoru had killed, because she simply could not speak up.

Getting close to her, Denji said she should not worry about that right now, and that they should just deal with it after he took down the Death Devil. Right now they were having fun, and she should only be thinking about blasting a hole through one of the buildings in front of them.

Over at the high school, a teacher working with the festival planning committee was leading a new person to class, explaining as they walked that not many people were moving to Tokyo at the moment.

Coming to a halt just outside the classroom, the teacher interrupted the festivity planning to introduce the transfer student to the rest of the class.

Stepping up, a nervous, messy-haired girl with the same eyes as Makima, Nayuta and Fami announced that she was here to save them. She then began telling the rest of the student body that she felt really bad for them, before proceeding to bawl her eyes out as soon as the teacher left.

A kid with an adhesive bandage on his face asked her if she wanted to help with anything. She accepted at first, but when all she was asked to do was throw the garbage into the school incinerator, she refused, on the grounds that it would be a waste of her powers. She told him that he should take it out, because unlike her, he did not have powers to save people with.

Not wanting to start any conflict with this crazy woman, he took the garbage and walked off.

As the rest of the students looked at each other with discomfort, the same girl who had bullied Asa told the transfer student that everyone was starting to feel super uncomfortable around her, and that if she really wanted to help, she should be outside squishing ants.

The bandage kid found the transfer student later, alone outside, squishing ants.

He told her that he could tell, from the fact that she had come from out of town, that she had probably been involved in some devil-related tragedy. He let her in on the fact that many of the students were already in a similar boat, and that school was the one escape from reality they had. So if there was one way she could save them, it would be by smiling.

The transfer student broke her composure. The festival, she said, was on track to be a failure regardless of what happened. But she could still save them by freeing them from their suffering through death.

She was, she revealed, a devil.

Resting her hand on the boy, she planned to use him as an example. Then she paused, because she had noticed a silhouette standing above the school.
