Chapter 9Doors Over the Ruins

Then, as if the atmosphere itself were being dragged into a different realm, hundreds upon thousands of doors, all of different shapes and sizes, flooded the horizon.

As all of the doors in the sky creaked open, a torrential mass of organs vomited their way through, and she showered herself in all of it. As she slowly drifted her way down, Yoru placed herself upon a throne of flesh.

Cackling, she looked up at the trio and mockingly asked whether they had any final requests.

Unwavering, Death simply asked that she agree to her conditions, and she would allow all three of them to be turned into weapons. The condition was that War return to hell and spend the rest of her existence there.

Laughing at just how ridiculous the idea was, War refused.

Death threatened to use her power and kill her instantaneously. Calling her bluff, Yoru pointed out that she could not control the strength of her attack, and revealed that she had captured Death's karaoke friends and was holding them ransom. One wrong move, and they died.

Realising that she had been checkmated by her own humanity, the Death Devil stood there unable to do anything.

Yoru shifted her gaze to Pochita. She told him that the reason she had brought them all here was to settle the score once and for all. As far as she was concerned, they were tied one to one, and this battle would prove which of them was stronger. If Pochita won, the world was his. If she won, she claimed ownership of Pochita himself.

Pochita offered no reply, which Yoru took as a yes.

The two of them stood opposite each other, unmoving for a moment, and then, in a complete blur, they vanished from where they stood.

In a fury of vitriolic violence, Pochita split her body cleanly into three pieces, even as Yoru landed a series of devastating blows with her weapon fists.

Skipping away from the fight and flowing deep into the alleyways that made up his own subconscious, Denji walked about calling out for Pochita, when he stumbled upon Asa.

The young version of Denji called out, asking Asa what she was searching for. She did not answer. She simply bolted into the shadows, and as she ran, her foot came down on a chicken and crushed it instantly.

In the physical world, Yoru's mangled body stitched itself back together.

In a move that mirrored Makima's old pacts, she had made a contract with the governor of California. In exchange for sparing the state from her total wrath, the citizens of California would bear the burden of every injury she took.

With a sadistic grin, she reminded Pochita that there were thirty-two million people inside California. So how many more times did he plan to cut her down?

Raising her arm into the sky, Yoru summoned the Accident Devil and warped its power into a massive chainsaw whip forged from spinning wheels. Whipping it forth, the impact eviscerated a portion of Pochita and sent the rest of him crashing through multiple buildings.

Gleefully, Yoru chased him down. However, she was quickly cut off as Pochita lunged out through the debris and bisected her in one clean stroke.

In an instant, over in America, thousands more were wiped out, allowing Yoru to reform herself and set up her next attack. Flicking the whip in a circular motion, Yoru this time easily caught Pochita and beheaded the hero of hell in a fantastical spray of blood.

Back in the mindscape of Denji's alleyway, he scrambled to keep up with Asa. As she stopped, the figure she had been chasing all this time finally turned around.

As suspected, it was the one person Asa had never been able to let go of. Her mother.

As Asa spoke to her mother, she and Denji were pulled into a memory from her past. They stood on a riverbank where Asa's father lay collapsed, his leg bitten off by a devil. Standing over the beaten, octopus-looking devil, her mother turned to Asa and got down to dress her husband's leg.

While she did so, she frantically told her to go and find Public Safety for help.

Rushing through the alleys, a young Asa tripped and fell onto her face. By the time she returned, her father was already dead.

As the current Asa watched, she noticed a detail she had suppressed for years. Her father's skull was crushed, and there were fresh bloodstains on a nearby rock that had not been there before.

Sweat dripped from her brow as the realisation set in. Her mother had not just saved him. She had ended his life.

Later that night, as the two of them lay awake, her mother had justified what she did with some pretty perverted logic. The insurance payout for a death by devil attack was far higher than what they would have received if he had lived. Besides, her father was a bum, staying home drinking all day, and that money was the only thing that could secure Asa's education.

Asa said she did not really know whether her mother was a bad person for what she had done. But it was true that her life had got better after he passed away.

She also admitted that her trip that day had not been an accident.
