Chapter 14Singing for the CEO

Dohyun explained to her privately. "This is part of the plan. I need someone I can really trust to help me figure out who's behind all this, and that person has to be you."

Seo thought it sounded okay, so she agreed to cooperate as his bodyguard and personal assistant.

Finally, the truth about Namu came out. It turned out he wasn't some rich kid living a simple life, the way Seo had thought. Namu was actually just super lazy and irresponsible. His father was a successful businessman who was so disappointed in his lazy son that he kicked him out of the house and cut him off, to make him survive on his own. Namu wandered around aimlessly and happened to rent the place right next to Seo, which led to their funny friendship.

In reality, Namu had started to have a crush on her. Because of Seo, a lazy guy like him actually wanted to change and do something meaningful.

When Dohyun mentioned that he needed a spy inside the company to find the assassin, Seo volunteered right away. She even bragged that back in school she was great at snitching on her classmates' pranks to the teacher, so she'd be a total pro at this spying thing. Namu was also excited, and wanted to be Seo's personal manager.

Dohyun was annoyed. "She's just an intern. There's no way she gets a personal manager."

Namu argued that maybe one day Seo would become a star, so it was better to be prepared.

Dohyun looked at the two of them and just sighed, wondering whether these two clueless people would actually get things done or just blow his whole plan.

The next day, Dohyun took Seo to meet the CEO. He introduced her as a natural talent with a voice you would fall in love with. The CEO was excited and asked her to give it a try.

Seo started singing with way too much confidence, but the truth was that her singing was a total disaster. Dohyun stood next to her and had to sneakily cover his ears so he wouldn't be traumatised. Seeing the CEO cringe, he tried to fix things by saying she was better at dancing. Seo then started showing off some dance moves that looked like aerobics. Finally, when she moved on to an acting monologue, the CEO couldn't take it any more and yelled, "Get out."

When it was just the two of them, Dohyun finally confessed to the CEO that he needed someone he could totally trust to track down the person inside the company who wanted to kill him. That was why he had put on this act. The CEO heard this and agreed, but handed over all responsibility for managing Seo to Dohyun.

And so the days of hilarious and awkward training began. Dohyun coached Seo on everything, from going to the gym to learning how to sing and act. In one session, practising a romantic scene, Seo had to hug him and say romantic lines. At that moment, the warmth and closeness made Dohyun freeze for a few seconds. His heart skipped a beat, and he completely forgot it was just acting.

Right when things were getting romantic, Namu showed up out of nowhere with a suitcase and bedding. He declared that since he was Seo's manager, he had to be wherever she was. Dohyun was furious, but couldn't do anything about it.

Later, Namu privately told Seo that her strength was exactly what made him want to live more responsibly, even though he still didn't dare admit he liked her.

At the company, Sarah started teaching Seo how a star should be fancy and classy, while also warning her not to try anything with Dohyun, because he was already taken.

Just then, Seo received a note asking her to meet in the car park. At the same time, Dohyun received a text from a stranger saying they knew who wanted to kill him, and asking to meet in the basement to talk.

They both went down to the parking garage and realised they had fallen into a trap. The masked killer appeared and rushed in to attack Dohyun frantically. In the nick of time, Miran suddenly showed up, making the attacker run away.

Dohyun immediately grabbed Miran by the collar and yelled, "You're the one behind all of this, aren't you? You hired someone to kill me, didn't you?"

Miran calmly pulled out his phone to show him. He had also received a text, from Dohyun's number, asking him to come to the basement for an emergency.

It turned out that the person in the shadows had cooked up a super evil plan to trick all three of them into showing up at the scene, aiming to make them frame each other, or to take them all out at once.

The mental battle really began now. Miran insisted he was innocent. "I saw the text telling me to go to the parking garage, so that's why I came. Someone is trying to frame me to tear us apart."

However, Dohyun wasn't easily convinced. He was injured after the scuffle and had to go to hospital to get patched up. There he told Miran bluntly, "If I die, you're the one who wins the most. You'd officially take over all my contracts and my spot in this industry."

Miran just stayed silent, his face clearly showing how hurt and heartbroken he was.

Back at home, Seo advised Dohyun not to be too hard on him. "What if he's innocent? Maybe the killer intentionally set up a fake scene to make you doubt the person closest to you."

Dohyun listened but didn't answer. His mind was a total mess right now, not knowing who to trust or who to suspect.

The next day, a very funny situation happened. To have a legitimate reason to stay at the company and help Dohyun, Seo had to go to an audition with Namu acting as her manager. However, when they faced the director, he didn't even care about her performance. He was captivated by the looks and the vibe of the manager, Namu.

Seeing the director keep asking Namu to sing and act, the CEO quickly played along and introduced him as the company's most promising trainee. As a result, Namu was picked right away for a new film project. Seo's hopes were crushed, and just like that she went from being the lead role to being Namu's manager.

During a photo shoot, Dohyun took the initiative to make up with Miran. Following Seo's advice, he apologised, and Miran accepted, but then asked a question that made Dohyun's blood boil.

"What exactly is the relationship between you and Seo? Why is she living at your house? Don't forget you're already engaged to Sarah."

Dohyun blew up, told Miran to stop talking nonsense, and then stormed off.

Later, Seo was surprised to see the superstar Dohyun slurping down instant noodles, a cheap food that he used to totally despise. He opened up about his painful past.

"When I was ten, my mum passed away and I had to stay at my aunt and uncle's house. They treated me like I didn't matter, making me eat plain rice with pickles while their kids got to eat good food. Since then, I promised myself I'd become successful so I'd only eat the most expensive things, as a way to get revenge for my poor past."

Seo heard that and suddenly felt incredibly sorry for him. She realised that behind that arrogant exterior was a soul that had suffered a lot of pain.

Since Seo was now Namu's manager, she had to know how to drive, to pick up and drop off the new star. Dohyun took on the task of teaching her, but the lesson turned into a disaster. Seo kept forgetting everything she learned, and her wobbly driving drove him crazy, making him yell at her non-stop.

But when he saw Seo pouting, Dohyun's heart suddenly softened. Looking at her then, he felt all his tiredness and pressure just melt away.

He started asking himself, "What is this feeling? Could I really be in love with the girl who kidnapped me?"
