Chapter 6Pier Eight

Then a call came through, and Su Fu decided that she had better answer it.

It was Manman.

"How are you doing?" Su Fu asked. "Did you think about what I said to you?"

But Manman told Sister Fu that her brother had snatched her baby away from her, and that she didn't know where he had gone, and begged her to please help.

Su Fu's face changed. She swore under her breath and gripped her skirt in her fist and told Manman not to worry, because she would find the baby for her, and she would let her know the moment she had any news.

Then she asked Su Gu to check that man's whereabouts.

The little detective took out the portrait and opened it. The little programmer studied it and said that, judging by the lighting and shading his brother had painted, the scars on that man's face were very recent — they must be from the day before. And their mother was clearly no stranger to that man, and had been upset the moment she saw him, which meant that she had met him the day before and that they had had a conflict. So it was their mom who had hit that man yesterday.

His mother told him that he was right. But there was no reason at all for that man to run off with such a little girl, and this might not be as simple as it looked.

"Found him," the little programmer said. "He's on his way to the pier."

The little detective went very thoughtful, and Su Fu said that this was not good, because apparently somebody wanted to help the man get away, and they had to be stopped as soon as possible.

"Go to Pier Eight first," she told her husband. "Not the landlady's house. I'll explain it to you later."

Then she asked the little inventor to call the police and to send the address to them.

"Okay, Mom," he said.

Later the little detective told his mom that the pier was right ahead. There was a long staircase and a large ship at the end of it. Su Fu walked towards it and said that this was bad, because that ship was going abroad, and if the man escaped this time it would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

"There he is!"

He was carrying the baby, and the instant he realised she was there he tried to run.

Su Fu took off one of her heels. Apparently, she said, he wanted to run. And while he was running she threw the shoe at him and hit him directly in the head.

Then she was frightened, because the baby went flying out of his arms — but somebody caught the baby, and that somebody was the driver.

"Why are you here?" Su Fu asked him.

Manman's bastard of a brother stayed silent and tried to sneak away, but the driver grabbed him quickly and pinned his hands behind his back.

Someone else had picked up Su Fu's heel. It was Ji Yansi. He took hold of her leg and slid the shoe back onto her foot, and the blushing, startled Su Fu thanked him.

At the police station, Manman's brother said that he was only taking his niece out to play, and asked how that could possibly be considered a kidnapping, and said that it was a false accusation.

But the little detective Su An was there, and he asked the bad man whether he knew how many times a day that baby drank milk, and how much she drank each time.

The bad man asked the little boy why it would matter how much milk she drank a day, and told him to go away and calm down.

Su An told his mom that the man was bothering him, and his mother told her little baby not to worry, and said that a person like that should be sentenced to indefinite imprisonment so that he could reflect on himself and stop contaminating society.

Then Manman arrived, asking Sister Fu whether her daughter was all right.

"Your daughter is fine," Su Fu told her. And she said that she was quite happy.

A moment later they had to grab hold of Manman, because she wanted to hit her brother. She told him that he was a bastard, because he wouldn't even let his own sister's child go, and while she was telling him that she would kill him, a police officer also told the family to please calm down.

The little detective was looking at the man very seriously. Su An, very angry now, told him again that he didn't even know how much milk a child drank in a day, so he probably wouldn't have been able to take care of her at all — and that made the situation worse, and now both Su Fu and Manman wanted to hit the man.
