Wednesday, October 1, 8:30 PM, my doorbell rang twice.
Kendra stood on my front steps with a clipboard.
Jason stood one step down.
Same half-step behind her.
Owen was in the hallway behind me in his socks.
I heard him stop.
Kendra held out the clipboard.
A purchase request was clipped to it, filled in, in her round handwriting.
Fund 300-9014
Payee: Tri-County Team Sports
Amount: $10,860.00
A yellow sticky arrow pointed at the signature line.
"You're still the signer," she said.
"Sign this and Hector gets paid from the stand money."
"I'll pay it back after homecoming."
"Pay it back from what?" I said.
"From the drive."
"Obviously."
"Where's the drive?"
"Safe."
"Tess, don't start."
Jason came up one step.
"Fourteen kids are seniors, Tess."
"It's their last homecoming."
"You want them out there in last year's jerseys?"
"I want the drive in the district account."
"It's going there," Kendra said.
"After homecoming."
"I told everybody."
Jason held up his phone.
The screen said Mom.
He'd had her on the whole time.
"Go ahead, Mom," he said.
Her voice came out of the speaker small and wet.
"Theresa, honey."
"Just help your brother's wife."
"It's a few weeks."
"Why does everything have to be a fight?"
"It isn't a fight, Mom."
"Then sign the paper."
She was crying.
I could hear her pulling tissues out of the box.
Seventy-one years old and crying, and I was the reason.
I took the clipboard.
Kendra let out a breath and smiled at Jason.
I read the whole form.
Near the bottom was a box marked Reason.
Reason: transition shortfall, prior treasurer.
I read it twice.
Prior treasurer.
That's me.
That's the line Dale would sign under.
That's the line the district would file.
"You wrote me into your own bill," I said.
Kendra's smile stayed put.
"It's just how it gets coded."
"My name on the signature line."
"My title in the reason box."
"For a bill you ran up."
Owen had come to the end of the hallway.
"Mom?"
"Go upstairs, bud."
He didn't.
I handed the clipboard back.
"Deposit the drive."
"I'll sign the request that afternoon."
"It's the same money, Tess."
"Then it won't mind the trip."
Mom made a sound on the speaker.
Jason took her off speaker and put the phone to his ear.
"She won't, Mom."
"I know."
"I know."
Kendra went down the steps without saying goodbye.
Jason followed her.
Owen stayed in the hallway.
"She put you on the bill?"
"She put me in the reason."
"That's messed up."
"Yeah."
He went upstairs.
Friday, October 3, 2:15 PM, Dale's deadline day.
I was on break in the back hall at Fenner's when the email came.
Ellen Voss, district treasurer.
It went to Dale, Kendra and me.
New Uniforms Drive — deposits received to date: $0.00
There was nothing else in the body but her signature block.
No deposit had come, so Dale had opened the audit early.
Six minutes later he replied to all.
He wrote that no purchase order had ever been issued for Invoice #4471.
He wrote that he would not sign a request naming a prior treasurer.
He wrote that he would not spend concession deposits on an order placed off the books.
Three sentences.
Dale doesn't write four.
At 2:40 Kendra replied to all.
A formality. Moving on.
I went back to the slicer.
At 5:00 PM I was wrapping a pound of salami when my phone buzzed.
Hector.
Deadline passed. Nothing shipped.
I set the salami on the scale.
It weighed what it weighed.
Saturday, October 4, 9:00 AM, Jenna posted a flyer in the parents group.
Gold letters on navy.
UNVEILING AT HALFTIME — Dr. Ashby presents our Hornets' new look!
Two hundred shares by lunch.
The jerseys were still on a shelf in Lima.
Kendra knew that.
Hector had called her twice.
By noon the flyer was taped to the front door at Fenner's.
That evening my phone lit up on the couch.
Kendra.
Come to homecoming and smile.
Or Ashby hears who held up the uniforms.
Owen was on the rug stretching his hamstrings.
"Is that her?"
"Yeah."
"What do you even say to that?"
I didn't answer him.
She didn't need uniforms on Friday.
She needed somebody to blame in front of the man who could pay the bill.
I thought about Hector at the deli in August.
Ask in writing.
Keep it.
At 9:12 PM I typed one line.
Which account did you give Hector?
Read 9:14 PM.
