Chapter 8Brad's Phone

Brad came at eleven that night, on foot.

He'd left his truck at the church lot so nobody would see his face on the door in my driveway.

He knocked on the back door, which nobody in this family has ever done.

"I can't stay," he said, and then stayed two hours.

He sat at Mom's table with his coat on.

I made him coffee.

He held it and didn't drink it.

"Dwight called me after the supervisors posted their agenda," he said.

"He wanted to know if you were the type to go to the county."

"What did you tell him?"

"That I didn't know you."

He looked around the kitchen.

At the pill organizer.

At the empty hook by the back door.

"Twenty years of Thanksgivings," he said.

"I really didn't."

Then he put his phone on the table and turned it around.

A group text.

Three people.

Ostrander Ground

Brad, Glenn, and Dwight Harlan.

It started in March, when Mom could still walk to the mailbox.

"I was in it for the listing," Brad said.

"That's all I thought it was."

"Scroll."

So I scrolled.

Dwight: Permit app is due 5/1. Need the landowner on the manure easement.

Glenn: Mom won't sign anything Nell doesn't read first.

Dwight: Then don't put it in front of Nell.

Then April 18, the Friday before Easter.

Glenn: She's in Saint Agnes till midweek. Fluid again.

Dwight: Hospital or not, get her name on it this weekend. Krista can stamp it.

Dwight: We don't need the sister.

Glenn had answered with a thumbs-up.

Then Easter Sunday, 3:12 in the afternoon, a photo.

Our kitchen table.

The easement, signed.

Krista's notary stamp lying on its side next to a plate of deviled eggs.

Glenn: Done. Happy Easter.

Dwight: Good man. Wire Monday.

I sat back in my chair.

At 3:12 that Easter, I was feeding Mom ice chips off a plastic spoon.

"We had ham at my folks' that day," Brad said.

"Glenn and Krista left before pie."

"They said they were driving up to Fort Dodge to see your mom."

"They never came," I said.

"Nobody came."

"I know that now."

He turned the cup in his hands.

"I didn't then."

"Why are you showing me this?"

"Because Dwight's going to say he got fooled."

"He'll put it all on Glenn and Krista and walk."

Brad finally drank some of the coffee.

"I sell houses to people I go to church with, Nell."

"If this comes out, I probably lose my license."

"I was in the thread."

"I didn't stop it."

"So why?"

He looked at the dining room doorway.

At the two dents in the carpet.

"Because you told me that's where she died," he said.

"And I said I'd shoot around it."

He sent me the screenshots.

All thirty-six of them.

Then he walked back to the church lot in the dark.

Friday I went to work at the co-op scale house like it was any Friday.

Harvest doesn't stop because your family is on fire.

I weighed trucks for six hours.

Gross, tare, net.

At eleven, a Harlan Swine feed truck rolled onto my scale.

The driver was a kid I'd taught in Sunday school.

He waved through the glass and said, "Sorry about your mom, Miss Nell."

I printed his ticket and waved back.

Forty-one people on payroll.

He was one of them.

At two I called Pruitt and asked him one question.

"If I send this to the county attorney, is that me doing it to Glenn?"

"No," he said.

"Glenn did it to Glenn on Easter."

"You're just the one who read it."

At four I drove home and laid everything out on the kitchen table.

The certified copy of Book 431.

The Saint Agnes discharge papers from the tin, admitted April 17, discharged April 22.

Mom made me keep everything.

The photo of her and the plastic egg, stamped 2:47 PM, April 20.

Brad's screenshots, printed at the library.

Dwight's folder, still clipped, the sticky note on top.

I wrote a public comment for the Board of Supervisors.

It was four sentences long.

I wrote a cover letter to the county attorney.

That one was two.

At 4:58, my phone lit up.

Dwight Harlan

I let it ring.

It stopped.

It started again.

Mom's spare key lay on the table beside it, the brass one with no ribbon.

The phone went dark at 5:00 exactly.

At 5:01, I hit send.
